Can a non-technical person become a handyman?

I like doing things for myself, but I have to admit something…shh…don’t let anyone hear…
I’m not very technical.
In fact, if I can get a doorknob to turn, I throw a party.
So when I buy things like the hanging planter that I put up today, I need them to be SIMPLE. And I thought this was, but as I was going back and forth, looking for tools, it dawned on me that this wasn’t turning out very simple. First, there were brackets to hold the planter to my deck railing.
That’s okay.
But the brackets are—of all things—adjustable. All right, fine. Except, why, when I tried to loosen the screws, did nothing happen? Could it have something to do with that hexagon, or whatever it was, on the other side? I think I heard someone call those things nuts, although that doesn’t make any sense. They seem pretty stable to me. And I don’t have to crack them.
Oh, well.
I figured it was worth a try, loosening the nuts. Now, how does the saying go again? Left-y loose-y, right-y tight-y. That’s right. Great! It worked! Now, to tighten them back up again. Whoa! Why did that black round thing go flying off the top of the nut? I couldn’t get it back on, so I just skipped it.
Well, time to screw the planter support to the railing. What in the world? Why did the company send big white screw-type thing-ies along with the screws? I experimented for awhile, trying to figure out why some things that looked kind of like huge screws with wings were in the kit. I never did figure it out. So I skipped it, and just screwed the screws in.
After one or two other hang-ups, I finally got the planter installed. It looks pretty good, if I do say so myself. Even if I DID do it wrong. I even got some sweet pea and impatiens planted today.
Who says you have to do it right? I believe you just have to do it so it WORKS. With my technical know-how, if I were to wait until I got everything right, I’d stick to taking naps all day—now THEY’RE easy.
