Decided to post another negative belief of mine and do The Work’s process.

Recently I posted an example of one of my own negative thoughts/beliefs and went through the process of The Work.  I will start posting articles of the process for each of my negative thoughts.  I thought that it could help someone if they have the same thought/belief, and that I could get feedback.  Sometimes I get stuck on the turn arounds, but perhaps someone who reads this can help me come up with turn arounds and/or reasons why the turn around is as true as the original statement.

All questions are taken from the One Belief at a Time Worksheet on www.thework.com

Negative Belief: If something goes wrong, I am to blame.

1. Is it true?  It feels that way.
2. Can you ABSOLUTELY know that it is true?  No, not absolutely.
3. How do you react, what happens, when you believe the thought?
-I feel depressed, worthless, useless.
-It brings a lot of stress to my life.
-I see a girl who is complete rubbish, who only ruins other peoples lives.
-I feel the symptoms of anxiety (panic, heartbeat racing) and depression.
-I treat others poorly.  I shut them out.  Want them all to go away.
- I hate myself, hurt myself.  Scream on the inside.
-I want to drink.  I hurt myself.  I find comfort in food.  Things I can control, when my life is out of control.
- First time I can recall was in grade school.  I was told that nobody wanted to be my friend because I was bossy.
-I don’t know whose business I am running around in.
-I get to be right when I really am to blame.  I get anxiety when something goes wrong, because I feel I am to blame, or feel I should be to blame.
-I fear I would get a big head, and never take blame even when I do things wrong.  I fear people would think badly of me like they did in grade school.  I fear it may hold me back.

4. Who would you be without the thought?
Without the thought I would be less anxious, more calm.  I would not worry about making mistakes because I would learn from them rather than them being an anxious thought.

Turn It Around.

Turn Around One: Opposite
If something goes wrong, I am NOT to blame.
- Everything is not my fault, because I can not control everything.
- Everyone makes mistakes, its inevitable.

Turn around two: Others
If something goes wrong, everyone else is to blame
-This is not entirely true though, because as I said in the previous turn around, some things cannot be controlled.

Turn around three: ?
If something goes wrong, no one is to blame.
-Sometimes, things happen, and no one is to blame.
-Unsure of any other explanations, or turn arounds.

Accept Reality:

  • I am willing to make mistakes, because it is inevitable.
  • I am willing to not be perfect, because no one is perfect.
  • I am willing to accept things when they go wrong, and know I am not to blame.  When I am at fault, however, I will acknowledge it and make amends.
  • I look forward to accepting things how they are.

If you have any feedback on The Work, or this specific inquiry, I look forward to hearing what you have to say.  In the coming weeks I will be doing more of these inquiries, so if you like them, I hope you will stop by for more!

Poetic, this is a very detailed list of bad and good thoughts. You always have to believe in yourself and, that you and you alone, control your own path in life. This could help so many who have struggled with these very thoughts. Very helpful piece!

It sounds to me as if you have made a really good first step to dealing with any problems of inadequacy you have and I am sure that this article could be very helpful to others in a similar frame of mind. Good work.

you’ve got allot of guts putting this on the internet. most people can’t even fill out the paperwork for themselves, let alone have someone else read it.

Wow, that’s very thought-provoking. You have a nice way of putting this into words.

Excellent self-therapy! Renee Descarte said “The only thing I can doubt in this world is knowing that I can doubt everything.”

Brave piece, PE. I think self-deprecation can be a slippery slope.

When my thoughts consume me and I feel fear or anguish, my turn around technique is to simply state: I am not my thoughts. My thoughts are not me. I am just a being filled with love and light. If I’m overwhelmed by negative thoughts I begin to observe my thought pattern and ask myself, “Why do you believe your thinking unconscious mind?” As I sit quiet and breathe, I don’t even have to really answer the question. Another good one is when something negative happens simply know, “this too shall pass.” That works for me. :)
