This is a blog on the joys of two of my favorite things, reading and pipe smoking.
It’s a glorious adventure to set out with ones friends, not knowing where the road will lead, but knowing that fellowship is a smoke away. That is probably why I am apart of a website for Christian Pipe Smokers. (Go ahead, laugh. Get it out of your system. Then go visit www.christianpipesmokers.net)
We are a brotherhood (with a few sisters) sojourning through this life with two things in common; pipes and God. Last Christmas I decided to participate in the CPS Secret Santa, where we bless one another with pipe baccy. This is were I discovered a pipe tobacco called, Old Toby.
Old Toby is a blend inspired by The Lord of the Rings. This was a pleasant surprise, made sweeter upon finding out that it is the second out of five in the Middle Earth Pipe Weed Series. Needless to say, I am eager to try the rest.
It was very refreshing to read how the filmmakers (and actors) took great care in bringing Tolkien’s love of pipes onto the big screen. If you have seen the movies, or read the books, you will see that pipe smoking is an additional character. Remove her, and you will have a vastly different story.
I will close with two great quotes that carry a lot of truth, as any pipe smoker can attest.
I hated tobacco. I could have almost lent my support to any institution that had for its object the putting of tobacco smokers to death…I now feel that smoking in moderation is a comfortable and laudable practice, and is productive of good. There is no more harm in a pipe than in a cup of tea. You may poison yourself by drinking too much green tea, and kill yourself by eating too many beefsteaks. For my part, I consider that tobacco, in moderation, is a sweetener and equalizer of the temper.
-Thomas Henry Huxley

My pipe of briar, my open fire, A book that’s not too new.”
-Robert Service
