I remember when I was in my first year in college, Mrs.Carey, our English I teacher asked us to read an article entitled “The TV is on But Who is Watching?” The article is about a family who is so fond of watching TV. Whenever they are at home, they always see to it that they turn the TV set on. But do they really watch it intently? No. They let the TV on but they continue to do their usual activity as in talking, eating, multitasking among other home based activity while the television set is on. I read that article almost two decades ago but I find it so evidently true even at our present times.

Why do we watch TV? I for one watch it to be entertained, to be informed of the news and current events and to have an instant companion as well. Yes, TV set has become our inanimate companion. It is so powerful per se because it could make us laugh, cry and think of what is happening around us. There was an instance wherein I think that my day to day activity is not complete without me turning the TV set on. I felt so bad when our TV set broke down. I felt so incomplete. I felt so alone and unhappy. For a stay at home mom, TV set is so important because when my children are off to school and my husband is in the office already, I am left with no one but my TV set. Sometimes I find watching it more worthwhile than gossiping around. I find watching TV not just a point of relaxation but of educational tool as well. I get to hear all the pertinent issues around the country. Be it social, political or entertainment issues.
