There were many toys I had as a child. But there is one toy I could remember rather distinctly. My rag doll was my companion and I played with it a lot. Do you have a special toy during your childhood?

My parents weren’t rich. In fact, many of the toys my sister and I had were hand-me-downs. You see, my grandmother worked as a cleaner for an expatriate. As their children grew older, they gave away a lot of toys to us on a regular basis.

But I often played with a particular rag doll. I do not know who gave it to me; I must ask my mum about that. I remember that it was my favourite toy. It did not have a name, like most people would expect. I remember that the rag doll wore a plaid dress and had blond hair.

When my sister was born, I was about 3 years old then. Whenever my mother breastfed my sister, I would follow suit. I placed my rag doll under my dress and pretended it was sucking my teats as well. Haha!

There was also another significant incident that my mum related to me. I was already asleep one night when I suddenly woke up and got off the bed. My eyes were wide open. I walked over to my toy box and rummaged through its contents. My mum looked on. I did not seem to notice her presence then.

I dug and dug further into my toy box. Finally, I found I was looking for – my rag doll! I took it with me back to bed. I placed it on my pillow beside me and I went instantly back to sleep. According to my mum, I had a history of sleepwalking and that was probably me in a sub-conscious state.

I believe the rag doll had a significant role in my personal development. Now that I have a daughter of my own, I had wanted her to have a rag doll too. But in the age of Barbie and numerous other plastic dolls, it was difficult to find a rag doll.

I kept on looking around. In the end, I found a pair of rag dolls for cheap at Toys ‘R Us. My daughter got attached to the brunette, long-haired one. It wore a denim dress which was removable.

She brings it along to be every night. It keeps her company and she often engages in a conversation with it. I hope one day when she is older, she’d remember her doll, like I remembered mine.
