I am a sufferer of this terrible disorder that is brought on by the Winter months and lack of sunshine.

Winter is almost over and once again the long days have come,
my depression and no energy has been lifted by the sun.
As it raises its head and comes shining brightly,
into my room it begins to peek,
awakened by its glory light,
Happy thoughts come back to me,
from where I always seek.
No more depression to set in,
it brings back my happy face,
oh where has it been, it left me in this place.
All my energy that’s been lost.
Now comes back to me with great cost.
Oh how beautiful and warm its rays
as they hit my face now these are the long days.
Summer has once more arrived,
and once more I will strive.

I am a sun worshiper, I always have been and probably always will be until I die. There is nothing that puts a smile on my face faster than being exposed to the glory of the sun. Take a moment and think what life would be like without its warmth and light? What a dismal place the earth would be.

Yes, I am one of those who suffer from seasonal affective disorder or SAD as it is called and every year depression sets in to me for the entire winter. Some call it the winter blues and that’s a true statement. The days are shorter and the sun doesn’t shine as much. From November till early spring this disorder will plague me.

Some doctors thing this disorder is caused from your circadian rhythm being disrupted or your internal clock being messed up from lack of sunlight. This also causes sleep disorders because circadian rhythm are what keeps track of our sleep patterns.

Melatonin is a sleep related hormone they think may also be connected to SAD. Serotonin is a chemical we make in our brains. Reduced sunlight can cause a drop in serotonin, and can lead to depression. You can take a supplement for this.

There are treatments I have tried from light therapy to depression medication, but nothing makes me feel better than spring coming and the sun shinning high in the sky.

Your disorder is caused by lack of vitamin D, which you get from natural sunlight. you need to go outdoors more often, or get a hobby.

Great job on this. You should be feeling the warm sunshine soon enough. :)

An informative article. I am sorry you suffer from it. I must say I don’t like the short days and can’t wait for the Spring.

We’ve never had winter over here. Just lots of sun and rain. Yet we long so much for what we don’t have. Such is human nature. I know the sun will shine on you very soon.

I have heard of this and to a small extent must suffer myself from this. on sunny days i have all the energy in the world and cloudy days just let me curl up somewhere. I hope the sun shines on you real soon Linda. it shouldn’t be to much longer now for days of sunshine. Great article and very informative.

I CAN FEEL FOR YOU, I SUFFER FROM DEPRESSION SEVERELY, AND EVEN WHEN THINGS LOOK BRIGHT FOR ME IT’S HARD TO SNAP OUT OF IT. I PERSONALLY BELIEVE HUMANS AS MAMMALS WERE MEANT TO HYBERNATE DURING THE WINTER, AND THATS WHY WE ALWAYS FEEL A LITTLE LOW DURING THE WINTER

Hi. I am originally from Northern California, and it seemed normal to me that I always got down in the fall and winter months, and then I always got happy in the spring and summer. I thought that was a normal thing. Then, I lived in Florida for 10 years where it is pretty much always sunny, and I was happy for 10 years without any symptoms! Then I had to move to a place where it is almost always cloudy all year round, and the blues set in, and I began to associate my mood with the lack of sun. I have decided to move back to Florida, because I now know that we who have seasonal affective disorder don´t have to live months out of our lives every year being sad and without energy, because I experienced 10 years of being symptom free when I lived in Florida! Now here in TN, where there are months of gloomy whether, I realize I don´t have to live this way. I am moving back to Florida!
