Sir Adams George Archibald, my form of his diaries of Confederation of Canada.

Nov.6,1864

The third day of the conference started off fast today, though I felt a bit out of it.  Probably the result of one too many drinks last night.  I shall have to keep an eye on how many I have tonight.  The proposal of buying Rupert’s Land seemed to be a topic many people wanted to discuss, as everyone wanted more land.  However, shortly after starting they realized if we bought the land it wouldn’t be given to a specific colony.

Starting off everyone was arguing over how the land would be split up.  New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island didn’t want to buy it as they felt they wouldn’t get as much land.  Newfoundland and Canada East were undecided and Canada West and Nova Scotia wished to buy the land.  William Henry Pope thought that because Prince Edward Island had less land than anyone else they should get more land.  Just more proof to support my original thought that they are just a selfish group of people, only wishing to benefit themselves.

Then the point that the land would not be given to specific colonies came up, and the country would own it and anyone could buy some if they wanted to move there.  This put the debate going in a completely different direction.  The delegate of Prince Edward Island still thought it wouldn’t be fair, thinking that bigger colonies would get more land, still not understanding it wouldn’t be owned by a specific colony.  They were right that more people from one colony would move there than people from another, but that’s only because they bought the land themselves, not because it was set aside for that colony.

Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick still disagreed, thinking it would cost too much and thinking it would be hard to pay off, not understanding how we would pay it off.  My colleagues and I explained it would be paid off by the money from people buying the land from the country and taxes.  Still, after explaining this multiple times, New Brunswick disagreed, though Prince Edward Island was agreeing.  Canada East and Newfoundland also agreed.  The reason New Brunswick didn’t want to agree is because it would put them into bigger debt.  They did not see that if they also agreed to proposal three that would take away that debt.  Mr. Frederic Carter of Newfoundland made a great suggestion of buying the land then making four new colonies, which was accepted by everyone, but the number of colonies was lowered to two or three.  This was accepted by everyone and the proposal was left at that.
