We seldom have snow in Georgia, and when we do it is a big occasion. We must rush out to buy bread and milk before the ice freezes. We have school, and work closings and try to stay in off the roads.
The weather man has been telling us for days we would have snow on Saturday, and I being the doubting Thomas that I am, and knowing we so seldom get snow said, “I will believe it when I see it.” so I was surprised when it began to snow Saturday morning.
We are so unused to having any snow that at the first hint of snow, we all make a run on the stores to pick up bread and milk. My son and Lionel’s son both called to see if we wanted them to pick up bread and milk for us, but we had already been to Aldi’s, and didn’t need any. By that time the stores were probably out of bread and milk if it was as usual at the mention of snow. They were already announcing on the T.V. the churches that would be closed on Sunday (today) due to snow.
We were warned to stay off the icy roads and be prepared for power outages. We do have frozen branches falling into power lines and pulling them down, also snow freezing on the power lines, and downing them so it is a real concern. The biggest concern in icy conditions is black ice. It freezes on bridges and low places where you can’t see it. We always have collisions and cars sliding off the sides of the road. People who are used to driving in snow and ice in other parts of the country are in particular danger because they don’t understand our slick ice.
We watched the snow falling from our living room window which faces a stretch of woods, and it was beautiful laying on the ground, and branches of the trees. I went out on our deck to snap snowy pictures before the snow stopped and melted away. It did stop after an hour or so and began to melt but when we went out this morning the steps up to the parking lot were icy and snow was still on our windshields.
The ice was frozen hard but there was a strip at the top of the windshield that Lionel could see out of, so we got in the car and drove to the mail box. (We didn’t go yesterday during the snow.) Lionel was sure the Honda wouldn’t start because it has to be jump started sometimes when the weather gets below freezing, but it started O.K. Then he started the Chevy, which we weren’t worried about because it always starts, then went to Aldi’s to pick up cheese which is an addiction at our house, and chocolate. The two things we can’t do without.
It was19 degrees yesterday and too cold to walk, and it is still too cold today. We really miss walking, and I think we are both getting cabin fever from two days staying inside. The sky is a bright baby blue without a cloud in sight, brisk, cold, and icy. It is just beautiful to see out the window but too cold to get out, for me anyway. We usually see people outside wearing shorts year round. I didn’t see that this morning, but then very few people were out side. Firewood must be selling well today, though it is so expensive and lasts such a short time that it’s hardly worth while.
Lionel is getting ready to watch the football games, and after I check my e-mail and download my snow pictures, I will quilt another block of my quilt. I counted last night, and I have 6 more blocks to quilt before I can put the whole thing together. I enjoy designing my quilt, and planning it but I am always anxious to be done with it. Hopefully tomorrow it will be warmer, and we can get out and walk away our cabin fever.
