A true life story of getting into the legal business.
To tell my story, no one would believe it. They’d think I made it all up. But, it is all true. I never would have believed it myself, except for the fact that it actually happened.
It all began the summer of 1985. I had worked hard to complete my schooling and make sure before I took on this new career that all my children were back in school and ready to except and help me with the change. I had waited until all my children were in school before going back to work, full time. My kids were great.
I began working for a local attorney in Honolulu, we’ll call her Susan. Susan was the first job I landed after completing my schooling as a Legal Assistant. She was divorced and had a son about the same age as my oldest son. I was real excited to learn as much as I could about working in this field and I wanted to be ready for anything.
It was on a Monday morning when I first met with Susan. Her office was downtown Honolulu, quite small and she had a very small staff of three. The receptionist, Marian, a law clerk, Belinda her secretary and a paralegal Christy, which I found out was the one I would be replacing. Seems Christy was leaving and it appeared to be that day. The interview was brief and I started the very next day. I was a bit nervous as I had never done this type of work before and surely thought I would have some additional help.
I fell right into preparing legal documents and filing documents at court. Susan was a great help as she spent many hours explaining things to me and going over my work. I was excited each day going into the office and finding out what or who might call that day. I was mostly handling family law case, divorces, restraining orders, and custody documents. I was learning a lot. I learned how to do client in-take, how to set up a client file and how to prepare documents for filing at the various court. I learned how to listen to each client and take very good notes and to review those notes to ensure it made a picture of events. I really loved what I was beginning to do with my life. Nonetheless, that all changed within 6 months.
