So many of the technological advances that have changed our daily lives are taken for granted. For a compelling interaction with your children, sit down and discuss all of the new gadgets or processes that they use without thinking about it, and the way you used to do the same thing.

Every now and then, when I want to entertain my son and have a lengthy conversation with him at the same time, we play a little came called “They Didn’t have that When I was Growing up!”. It may sound silly but you will be amazed at the way your children become intrigued by the way life was back in the “olden days”. You also might find yourself cursing your gadgets less, and appreciating them more.

I love explaining to my son that we used to use things called phone booths when we weren’t at home and needed to make a phone call. Then I describe my first cell phone, a bag phone about the size of a briefcase. Comparing my current PDA, with all of it’s programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint to a pay phone booth usually gives both of us the giggles. As an added bonus, it makes me less likely to fall into a rage the next time I am in an area with limited cellular coverage or a poor signal. Imagine standing at a pay phone booth in a parking lot somewhere….Can you hear me now?

Love the “ancient quivering voice” bit…I have one of those, too.
