A humorous look at the state of the economy and trying to earn a living as a freelance writer.
We are living in tough economic times my friends, and jobs are hiding under every conceivable rock just out of reach. What is a highly educated and categorically brilliant woman such as myself to do? In case you’re not picking up what I am laying down, this article is a humorous outlook on the job market. I spent a year and a half getting my advanced degree and now have an M.B.A. with a specialization in Human Resource Management. It was one of the most rigorous and challenging programs that a person can embark on. I was taking upper level Stats, Finance, Econ, Strategy and Accounting triple paced, without ever having undergraduate coursework in these areas. I spent many a night up until 3:00 a.m. drinking coffee (or wine) and crying my eyes out because I didn’t understand the material. I waited for the “aha” moment that always seemed to arrive late at night when I least expected it.
I would jump out of bed, nearly tripping down an entire flight of stairs, and fire my computer up so that I could get it down on paper. Those were trying times folks but I made it though my program with an “A” average. I totally rock. I am very right brained, and creativity has always come second nature to me. Math? Not so much. It was a real accomplishment to get a Master’s degree in an area that went contrary to how my brain works naturally. I was happy dancing all over town when I graduated in November, and now the the initial rush has worn off. What do I do now? I have looked high and low for the scant jobs in my field, and applied for as many of them as possible, but everyone wants experienced Human Resource Managers. Ah, the double edged sword; too much education and not enough experience. Excuse me while I jump off this cliff that I’m looking at outside my window. I’ll be right back. Cliff diving without a parachute has started to look like a viable job opportunity right now.
When I was nearly finished with my degree I started freelancing for a few online websites to earn a little money and get a byline. I have accomplished that goal but am still trying to make a name for myself in the writing world. I am currently writing a book on my various adventures over the past few years and it’s a madcap look at everyday life, Seinfeld style. I truly am the type of person who would write a “Soup Nazi” episode. Unfortunately, there are people in my life that are a little straightlaced. When I write, I like to throw a cuss word out there every once in awhile. Hell, it’s fun, why not? My pen name is Sydney Out Loud and for good reason. The outrageous thoughts that make me smirk and guffaw, sometimes come out in my writing. You need to be a strong person to handle me. If you take your coffee very black and very strong, you’re gonna dig my writing in a big bad way.
