Bert Baxter’s Involvement in Adrian’s Life

January

Adrian joins the Good Samaritans Club. The club is all about helping old and poor people. This is when Adrian meets Bert Baxter. Baxter is not someone friendly and kind. In fact, he phoned the school complaining about the hedge-clippers, claiming that Adrian has left it out in the rain. For this reason, he asks the school for compensation.

February

As Adrian comes to visit him, he is not home because he goes to the Skegness for the Evergreens meeting. The following day, Baxter gives Adrian a stick of broken Skegness rock and apologizes to Adrian for the hedge-clippers complain. The reason for the complaining is that he’s lonely and needs to hear a human voice. He also talks a lot about World War and how his life is saved; by the Bible in his pocket.

March

Bert Baxter was thrown out of the Evergreens because of his bad behavior at the Skegness. It was Adrian’s grandmother who tells him of how Bert Baxter makes a fool of himself while he was drunk at the Evergreen meeting. When Adrian comes to see him, he asks Adrian do the washing up in the sink. Besides, he told Adrian of his belief in marriage. He does not support divorce because he himself can bear a marriage for 35 years it was not so bad. He has 4 children, 2 of them are in Australia and the other two lives there but none of them come to see him. Both of them spend some time together, by walking side by side to see Blossom and eat dinner together. He also tells the social worker that Adrian, his “grandson” will always come to look after him every day so that social worker’s will not take him to old people’s home.

April

He is a thoughtful man when he remembers Adrian’s birthday and Sends a birthday card to school with a note saying that drain blocked up and definitely it means that Adrian has to come at once to help him with the blocked up drain.

May

On May, he rings the school urgently for the reason of losing his false teeth. He is dependent and quite lazy because he always calls Adrian, for instance to find the false teeth.

June

On June, he’s ill and hospitalized.

July

He escaped from hospital and stay with Adrian. After quite a while, he moved in with the Singhs. He seems quite happy with them and starts to like Indian cuisine, the curry.

September 6th

He finally moves back to his old house with the debt to the council worth 94 pounds in rent arrears.

October

His legs become weaker, so he starts using the wheelchair. His helplessness in doing daily activities makes the Social Services to take him to the Alderman Cooper Sunshine Home. When he visits Adrian, he cries and refuses to go back.

Dec

Bert and Queenie become a scandal. On his visit to Adrian’s house, he admitted that he’s in love with Queenie while Adrian helps him in the toilet.

Jan

He finally marries Queenie and moves into a bungalow for honeymoon.
