It takes a very strong willed person with a sense of authority and force to be the best of the best. This means that the category in which we place ourselves is in a category all on its own.

In the kindest words I knew I said “Please get rid of the cell phone”, however he continued to talk on my line. I then yanked the cell phone from his hands and dangled it above the fryer and said “either lose it or I’ll drop it in”, he quit the next day.

First Line cook Job

At 18 years old, I was fortunate to land a great job as a line cook at a high profile Italian restaurant. The Executive Chef that initially hired me transferred to another location 3 months later and we received an absolutely tyrannical Chef from Atlanta.

It wasn’t one month until the Chef started coming on to me even though he was married with kids. I continued to say it was a mistake and I would never get involved in that way or with a married person. He was so angered by this; I suppose since he had a lot of power in his position and expected people to buckle to him.

When Saturday night came around, he was on expo and I was on grill. He was yelling calling and I was taking them as fast as I could move. At the time, I had over 50 steaks going at one time trying to concentrate on temps and his calls.

He asked me “Hey Chef B#@$ch, did you hear my last call?” I was so mad that I proceeded to throw my tongs at his head. In turn, he came back and pushed me up against the side of a 500 degree oven causing third degree burns all the way down my leg.

Needless to say, the guy was fired a month later.

A Chef’s Attitude

It just goes to show you that Chefs, when provoked, are surrounded my sharp objects and they won’t hesitate to throw them. It’s like the cartoon chef in Little Mermaid that’s chasing the crab so he can chop and dice it into hundreds of pieces.

This is not to say that all chefs are tyrants, we just love throwing things. I think it’s in our blood. It starts bubbling and the first bag of frozen chicken wings we see gets thrown at a moving target.

If anyone has ever worked in a restaurant they know exactly what I mean. Restaurant work is hard and you have to be able to tolerate many types of people no matter how many times they send back a well done steak that is covered with ketchup and they want it cooked up.

Thanks for your help. I’m not so “powerful” as you, so SOS lol..I’ve many articles being copied and pasted under someone’s name, their blogs, forums, discussion boards over the internet. Sometimes, it makes me “down” to write. I’m not sure how and when Triond will solve this issue. I’m feeling disappointing too. So, I let the readers and writers to see themselves who’s a real writer but who’s not.

Copycat will never have a good ending though they may now be boasted with their “copied” articles from mine.

You go girl! My DH was recently asked to become a soux chef for a friend in his Bistro, DH was a Pharmacist in the UK but found the kitchen here in Cyprus and I have never looked back, however, DH and I both know that if he stepped into a kitchen, cooked and someone complained, they would end up wearing it! He declined the offer I am thankful to say. Well done and thank you for all your efforts on our behalf, Lauren.

HA! Threw a pair of tongs at the bastard’s head? Serves him right. I wouldn’t want to step out of line in your kitchen. My cell phone might come out deep-fried! Great article Lauren.

great post, thanks for the info you provided, i did the same thing as you did -sent them email letters telling them that i’ll file a case against them for violating copyright law and that i’ll request proper authorities to have their site shut down forever,so glad many of them deleted my articles they copied and pasted on their sites.
you’re such a brave and straightforward young lady Lauren and I admire you for that, happy holidays to you and your love ones

  • Bo Russo on Dec 23, 2008

    Lauren,

What method did you use to search for your work??
(Fried cell phone? Signature plate? lol)

  • Darlene McFarlane on Dec 23, 2008

I have searched my articles often and it is amazing where they end up. I found a few who were kind enough to link back to the article site. Threats usually work for those who copy in entirety, if they are stupid enough to copy, they are usually not smart enough to call your bluff.

Good on you Lauren! I would like to have seen the look on the guys face when you threatened to french fry his cell phone.

    Hey Lauren,
Great article. I never thought about anyone stealing our work. I just assumed Tri protected it…think I will do a search on some of my work!

That a99 had a lot of nerve calling you a “b” but then to put his hands on you. Some people think they can treat others (esp. women co-workers) just anyway, and get away with it.

I often wondered if chefs really act like Ramsey :)

  • Bozsi Rose on Dec 25, 2008

You are not a woman to be trifled with! I respect that. Good for you for shutting those sites down. How hard is it to come up with your own material?

  • Lauren Axelrod on Dec 25, 2008

It’s difficult sometimes to come up0 with fresh ideas Bozsi but, I thought that maybe it would be hilarious to tell some stories from when I started in the kitchen.

Trust me, it was a bit like Ramsey.

  • Telscafe on Dec 25, 2008

    Very interesting Lauren.
    Enjoy your articles. Informative too.

    Cheers!

Hey Lauren, where do I sign up for my chef’s hat?!?!? I’ve been known to toss things too… but I prefer shoes. Threw one once at my ex-husband’s chest and guess what, he ducked! I don’t get why people are stealing our articles. I’ve been looking around and if they just want content there are places that you can get syndicated content for your site. This is a great write, had me giggling! -M
