There’s a record snowfall this winter season in my home state, and some idiots want to tell me that it’s because of global warming.

I live in the Baltimore metro area. With a few storms starting back in the early season (one even before the official beginning of winter I believe) and two major blizzards just recently, a new seasonal snowfall record has been set for Maryland. And the meteorologist are saying that there’s more to come. According to BWI airport (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitalweathergang/2010/02/winter_2009-2010_likely_snowie.html) the total snowfall for the 2009-2010 season is at 72.3″

With snow in all 50 states this season, some people and scientist are saying that all the snowfall and cool temperatures are part of a result of a global warming trend. In a recent episode of the Dylan Ratigan Show on MSNBC, the host explained to less educated folk like myself how the increased snowfall is because of global warming.

.

What I don’t understand though is how all this snow was predicted by global warming experts. It was not to long ago that everyone was singing the blues about how global warming was going to melt the ice caps and snow reservoirs.

Back in March of 2002, Senator Byrd of West Virginia said, “Look at the kind of winter we have had. Look at the kind of winter we have had here in Washington: One snow, 3 inches. Look at the drought that has come upon this area of the country during the winter season. What can we expect for the spring and summer season? What is going to happen to our crops, our livestock, our economy? This is serious.” He explained a few more details and then went on saying, “Our proposal is based on scientifically, technically, and economically sound principles and would put into place a comprehensive, national climate change strategy, including a renewed national commitment to develop the next generation of innovative energy technologies.”

A national climate change strategy? If you ask me, it seems like the climate changes every day. One day it rains, on the next day there’s not a cloud in the sky. What gets me is that in this country we’ve only been keeping records of the weather for roughly 200 years. The first mercury thermometer was not invented until 1714. 1714! So at best we’ve been keeping temperature records since 1714. The Earth is supposedly over 4 billion years old. So for close to 300 hundred years, we’ve been recording temperatures, which is roughly 00.0000075% of the Earths overall history. And they want to predict the future based on that?

Here’s what I don’t understand. A while back, according to some people global warming causes droughts and lack of precipitation i.e. snowfall. Now the same group of people say that all the recent snow fall is caused by global warming.  You can’t have it both ways. If global warming begets increased snow fall, then global cooling should cause a decrease in snow. Or is it the other way around. Global warming causes droughts, therefore global cooling creates precipitation. Or is it…. Now I’m confused.

Well, whatever causes what, all I can say is that while I used to be a little skeptical of global warming, I now don’t believe one word of it.
