A vacation with two little ones.

“Two weeks?” Husband sounding whiny, when I told him my daughter’s two boys, Andrew twelve, and Henry seven years old, were coming down to Arizona from Iowa.

I had wanted them the whole summer, but was afraid my husband couldn’t handle two little boys that long.

“So when can you guys come?” I could hear a muffled conversation over the phone, between my grandson, Andrew and my daughter, Heather.

Heather’s voice piped over the air-waves, “I will check flights on-line,” she said.

And so, our two weeks with the boys were set. A few days later my daughter wondered if we could take them for three weeks. They had just sold their home and were going to be moving around that time, so it was really convenient for them to have the little guys out of their hair. That was fine with us.

Well, for me anyway. My husband, initially, made a few cryptic remarks. “I hope you know what you are doing.” We were both divorced, and had now been married for a grand total of four years. For my part I still felt we were still kind of on our honeymoon. My husbands usual funny quip (he thinks) was: “Four years of hell”-anyway-back to the boys visit, my husband just reminded me that we wouldn’t be able to take showers together – or anything else – for three whole weeks. I hadn’t thought about that. But I told him this would be good for us; it would teach us to appreciate our time alone. I got a very straight look on that one.

“They will need to be entertained.” He gave me smug look. I thought that was hitting below the belt since he knew I hated heat and was nothing more than a couch potato. I write a lot, blog on the computer, and in my spare time, I have a passion for reading…all non contact sports.

“This will be good for us,” I said, ” We love the boys.”

“It will cost money.”

I was beginning to think there might be something to that old theme about Scotsmen being careful with their money…Angus is a Scotsman…but then I reasoned, he was just pointing out in couple language that we had had our fair amount of financial difficulties lately. What with car trouble, the air conditioner going on the blink and having to be fixed, we were kind of short on money. I explained to him that my daughter was sending a debit card with them.

You survived!!!! WOOHOO!! That is the hardest part, and those boys will want to come back and see their grandmother next year, as I am sure it will take at least a year to get ready for it again. It’s always nice when things get back to normal, and you can let out a relaxing breath.
