A letter I wrote regarding the racism and harassment I have been subjected to.

A letter to the editor,

At this moment in time, I am ashamed to say that I am a Bradford resident and although this is a multiracial city, racism is still rife here. Having been constantly racially harassed by youths and their family I have spoken to the police on numerous occasions who have either been incapable or unwilling to help me. I have had items stolen from my garden, had things thrown at my windows, been threatened to have my windows put through and house burned down, and had youths try to burgle my house.

All of this and yet I had had no response from the police  whom I contacted by telephone, email, and a formal letter even though I am a young black woman living alone. But then considering that the majority of the country has voted for the BNP, why is that such a surprise? It seems that the police only respond when there is a death and I am not prepared to be another victim like Stephen Lawrence and the other black youths who have been victimized for the colour of their skin.

We may be one of the ethnic minorities, but over the years we have become the silent majority.  What will it take for people like me to be noticed, to be given justice, and these people to be punished for their crimes? According to the majority of Britain it seems that they would have wished us to stay on the boats or maybe have sent us back when we first arrived. I am currently ashamed to call myself British. Don’t you think it’s time for society to make a change?

A voice of the silent majority
