From the Nurse to Juliet, trying to persuade her not to marry Romeo.
Dear Juliet,
I am writing to convince you to forget about Romeo and marry Paris. You may not like this idea, but I pray that you hear me out on this. First of all, your parents would like it better if you married Paris. Can you imagine what would happen if you married Romeo? Your parents would go crazy! Romeo is first and foremost, a Montague, which makes him your natural foe. If your parents found out about you marrying a Montague, even though you love him, they would be very upset, not to mention the possibility of them shunning you away from the Capulet family.
Secondly, Romeo killed Tybalt. He is part of the family, or should I say was part of the family. Any man who dares to kill one of the Capulet family is not worthy of a Capulet’s hand in marriage, especially not yours. Next, if you are going to marry, you should get your parent’s consent. I really do not believe they would jump at the idea of you and Romeo getting hitched. I know I might be like a parent to you because I basically raised you, but I am not your parent. Therefore I do not have the power to say yes. Even if I did though, I would not dream of letting you marry Romeo.
Romeo belongs to the Montague family and is therefore very wealthy. Paris on the other hand is much wealthier. I know that money should not be an object in the decision to marry any certain person, but it is. No one can escape that. If you happened to marry Paris instead of Romeo, you would be rich beyond your wildest dreams. Also, Paris is Prince Escalus’ cousin. If you married Paris instead, it is possible that you would be quite powerful. You might be able to help in the decisions of the Prince. When else would you get a shot at the kind of power the marriage to Paris would give you?
I know Romeo might have been love at first sight, but most feelings like that are false. If you were to marry Romeo on the grounds of “love at first sight”, it is very possible that you would discover your differences in very painful ways. You don’t want to marry someone and decide that you don’t really love them. That would cause you much pain and it would be very bad for your mental state of mind.
As you can see, Paris is a much better pick for you than Romeo would be. I believe that Paris would be a good match for you. I am not the one to decide this though, so if you decide otherwise, I wish you luck. I do not want to see you hurt. Please consider this possibility with much contemplation. I really want you to think about this.
Sincerely,
Nurse
