An imaginary letter from the twenty-third chapter of the book,”Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Dearest John,
It has been a long time since I have heard from you last. My wife and I have been doing excellent here in Boston. Our children are doing great. My eldest has been helping me add on to our home for he has the talent of a master carpenter.
Some very interesting occurrences have been going on here in the New World. Today was the Election Day to install the new governor of the town, and I still do not fully understand what happened. Well, to start off the day there was a large parade that strolled through the town. The holy ministers and the Governor and magistrates walked their way to the meeting house where the Election Day service would be held. The minister, that had previously been quite ill and pale, looked as if he had been rejuvenated. The color in his face had been restored and his vigor prevalent. I pushed my way through the crowd to get closer to the pedestal the minister spoke from. His sermons have been increasingly wonderful. It is as if a spirit from the heavens speaks through him, so I was anxious to hear his sermon today. He spoke convincingly of sins, and forgiveness of sins, and of God’s amazing love for us, that He forgives our sins though we do not deserve forgiveness. He also spoke of how we are humans and there are times when we sin, and that we must try to stand up after we have fallen. His concluding statement was this, “When I have fallen, I will try one hundred times to get back up, and if I fail one hundred times then give up, do you think that I will ever get up? No. I will try again and again, but have ye hope brethren, for it is not the end. What matters is how we finish. Are you going to finish strong?” The congregation stood before the minister, and the power which gave color to his face seemed as if it left him, and his face turned pale. The silence was only broken by reverent tears.
