Sherlock Holmes

Private Detective

10 Baker Street

London

Dear Mr Holmes

My name is Sandeep. You may not know me but I live near you in London on Butchers Street. I am writing to tell you with regards of a crime that has happened to my neighbour recently.

It was the kidnapping of his son. He was six years old and is his only son. I went to his household and looked around for clues that could help you. /I found several suspicious things. As his house was quite big, many of the rooms were abandoned and out-of-bounds to anyone. I saw that one of the rooms had something wedged between the window, and small paw-like footprints-as if someone was tiptoeing through the room. The kidnapper must have come in through there, and maybe retraced his footsteps on exiting. I have searched for the remainder of prints towards his son’s room but there aren’t any. Either the kidnapper cleaned up after himself or was extremely stealthy like a well paid assassin. Or both. There weren’t even flecks of dust on the floor to say he even went in past the room. This means the only person that could do this would have had access to the house. I currently only know of three people who have this-The gardener, the butler and the Horse driver. They each have direct access to all rooms (which as my neighbour used to say “To allow them to gain inspiration from other aspects of my home thus giving it a completely unique style.”). My thoughts are they could have called in a decoy to open the window and make those prints then to leave so their journey in would be unnoticed even after the kidnap. If this would be true, half their original idea has worked as I don’t know what entrance they came from to find any clues to use as evidence.

The most shocking of my discoveries is a small splat of blood on the wall in the kitchen. Also a knife was left on the floor, with blood on it. I think the kidnapper either cut my neighbours son’s somewhere and wiped the blood on the wall as a warning or they might have cut themselves by accident.

I think the motive for this kidnap was for a ransom, which is probably why they robbed a rich man’s most prized possession, his son. He would pay anything for him. They have yet to ask for the money though.

So I ask again, will you help me find out who did this and punish them accordingly? You are one the greatest intellects in the world and I hope you will respond with a letter and I would be delighted if you would come here too as that would raise hopes for everyone.

Well, Mr. Holmes had better be careful about going due to the man pre-determining what the evidence means.

As you stated, the disappearance was recent. You should immediately go to the outside of the house and inspect beneath the window you mention. You will find the child’s slippers,

The tiny paw-like foot prints moving away from the window are that of the child’s own feet. The boy was wearing slippers when his attention was attracted by a noise from the garden. A dog, or more likely a pair of dogs had treed the child’s cat. The child threw his slippers at the dogs and frightened them away. The object you say is pinned under the window sash is a child’s toy, most likely a toy soldier.

The boy ran from the window on tip-toe as the floor in the room was cold to the touch and therefore he left no heel prints giving the impression of a small animal at first glance and to the untrained observer..

The child then went to the kitchen where he removed a piece of meat fresh from the butcher and still quite bloody. Since he is a small boy, he placed the waxed butcher-paper on the floor, and after removing a knife from the counter, made an upward slice in the meat with as much force as he could muster. The meat was probably liver and therefore quite bloody. The child held meat down on the wax paper by both ends and sliced from inside the “U” shape formed. That is the reason there is a small splash of blood on the wall the reason I deduce the “crime” was very recent indeed. Blood will turn brown due tof oxidation in a matter of hours.

After slicing off a piece of the liver the child set the knife on the floor and placed the remaining meat in the ice-box, not wanting to spoil his father’s dinner completely. As the child was in a hurry to rescue his cat from the tree, he neglected to place the knife on the counter or in the sink. It is likely you will find a dish or tea towel still in close proximity to the child..

The child then went outside and induced the feline out of the tree. I would venture that the cat is female with kittens and was searching the yard for food, It is likely the child had forgotten the feed the animal the previous evening.

You will find the boy in the surrey barn high in the hay loft. he will be sleeping in a U-shape with the mother cat and her kittens partially encircled by the boy.

While you searched the large house from room to room and interviewed the staff, you made no mention of the surrey barn or the hay loft despite the presence of a “horse driver” and the obvious need for an out-building to house the horse, horse feed, and rolling stock.

I suggest you reduce your fee accordingly.
