This paper covers the different strategies and techniques used in writing a good and bad news letter.
There are many different strategies in writing good and bad news. In writing bad news, being positive or with a neutral opening is the best way to begin writing a bad news letter. Providing background details about the nature of the bad news would be the next step in writing a letter of bad news. Stating exactly what you want the reader to do with the bad news is something that should be considered, because this is the initial reason for writing the bad news letter in the manner that will let the reader down easy. To end the bad news letter one should close the letter on an upbeat note with a positive look to the future.
Good news should be written in a form that tells the good news first. Everyone always likes to hear good news and by stating the good news first allows the reader to know that the letter will usually be good news. The next step should give the details of the good news. This lets the reader understand why this is good news or what happened to make this good news. The letter should end with a call for action. This will list the outcome of the good news.
A good example of bad news could be that of having to explain to a customer that the warranty on his vehicle has been voided because of incorrect maintenance on a his/ her vehicle. In delivering this news to a customer, I would be direct about the reason, but not before stating the bad news that the warrant has been voided.
Conclusion
There are many different types of techniques that can be used in delivering good or bad news. Always consider who the reader is and the importance of the type of news that will be delivered. Bad news should begin positive and end positive. Delivering good news should start with good news and end with the call for action.
