The world war has passed a long time ago. But signs of it – are still scares. It is interesting to see, how the scars are still present in the eastern Europe society and the post soviet grounds.
I’m do not want to make this region look as if it has “suffered more then the others”. There are plenty of drunks and retards in countries like America and every other country on the world. What I find most interesting here is the effect that an ongoing humiliation and devastation, and being captured by another, economically unstable country that was trying to make it into a production center afterwards – has upon the human nature in oncoming generations.
There are plenty of women here, who had been grown in a surrounding of accepted common household of alcoholism and violence. Not to say this does not happen anywhere else – but the interesting part is, this was commonly accepted and almost “normal”. A book released in those times said “When a man comes home, he is to be fed, with his kids standing next to him in a correct line to show him respect, and wife doing as she is told. Afterwards, she has to clean the dishes and please her man in bed on demand. But the head of the family has to allow his wife to go to the bath and cry afterwards. This is a normal thing to do for women, and thus it should be accepted”.
People used not to have shoes and walk in dirt and live in extremely poor conditions and it was pretty much like “Little House on the Prairie” only heavy artillery, guns, government induced alcoholism, restrictions and authoritarianism, with a shit between Nazi and Soviet occupants beating one another back and forth and then soviet army taking over for 50 years.
All of the “bad” has passed. the people have staid. The effects are quite diverse. As always, some had found motivation in this, some had found devastation in it. We have a huge suicide rate, one of the leading ones. I believe that is because so many had taken up the aggression induced acting patterns during the war and complete neglection of human rights that some people had no other choice but to accept. We also have some of the poorest but mos successful students, that fight to go away from the misery and fear their parents had encountered.
I had talked to a huge amount of war participants. Who have a huge amount of being drunk stories and doing feats of stupidity surrounded by violent punishments. I talked to a man who deciphered Nazi Germany air plane signals in the western block of Berlin. It is very interesting to listen how he compared Tense and paranoiac Russian soldier attitude with happy and proud German soldiers. Not from the books, but from their own experiences…
After the soviets finely collapsed – we gained our freedom. A freedom of having no stable government, poverty of a post Russian block and wishes – of the American elite, with a population of a million post traumatic syndrome induced people, who had been grown with brain submerged in Vodka… We even had our fair share of nuclear reactor consequences… If you want a post apocalyptic scenario – come to Poland, Russia or Lithuania Fallout 3 has nothing on us…
