I was once a stargazer, scoping everything out.

I used to be a beggar, ‘til I got my fill
Once a pleasure seeker, ‘til I got my thrill
I was once a stargazer, scoping everything out
Through the eyes of faith
Through the eyes of doubt
I ran across a rive
It wasn’t very deep
The splashing made me shiver
How slippery were my feet
The current smoothed the sharp stones
And rounded the barbed edge
It’s hard to recall
When slip comes to fall
The view from high up on the ledge

I used to be a seer
‘Til I saw my fate
Once I was a seeker
‘Til I found the gate
I was once a pretender
And actor on the stage
Through the eyes of youth
Through the eyes of age
I went up on a mountain
The air was turning thin
I wandered ‘til I wondered
Could I begin again?
The north wind sang a pine song
The trees were bending low
It’s hard to recall
After the fall
The view from so far down below

I used to be a dreamer
‘Til I awoke one day
Once I was a schemer
‘Til I began to play
I was once a creator
My monument stood tall
To the rise above
To the rise and fall
I went out to the desert
A dry wind swept the land
I tried but couldn’t measure
The scattering of sand
A caravan behind me
A future yet untold
It’s hard to recall
After it all
The warm wind when the night turns cold
