My personal thoughts of Facebook and other social networking sites before I joined Facebook, my reasons for thinking social networking sites were pointless, my Facebook experience, the plusses, and my ending opinion.

Yes, this title says it all….I am such a noob at social networking sites, such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. Everyone I knew had their own pages at these huge social networking sites, and they were on them all the time. It was all they ever did, and I really didn’t understand why. Both friends and family would beg to sign up for MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, and get a page up, so they could add me as a friend. Then after a half hour of begging me, I would easily turn them down with points that seemed logical to me. I really never saw a purpose in owning my own Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter page. Here are my two biggest reasons why:

First of all, I do not have a lot of friends. Currently, I have five really good friends, whom I met in college, then I have all these associates, whom I really do not feel like outside of work or school. One of my friends is the Queen of MySpace and Facebook. She has the most decorated pages, with glitter falling down the page, with a different music playlist every week, hundreds of pictures…mainly of herself, and loads of comments from her so-called “friends”. Most of the people I know whom has a page at one of these social networking sites has at least 50 to 100 friends…and the reward goes to my cousin, who has about 750+ friends. I really do not understand how a person can have all these fake “friends” and talk to them all…it’s like no point in having all these friends.

Secondly, coming from my first reason…you can talk to the few friends you actually talk to over these social networking sites over the phone, at school, or wherever you see them. I see people leading whole conversations on MySpace with someone that they can easily call and talk to, or someone they are about to see in a hour or so.

Finally, in June of 2009, I was convinced to sign up and build a Facebook page. I am transferring to a University in August, and it was my future roommate that convinced me. Unlike the rest of the people that bugged me, she didn’t spend a lot of time trying to convince me. She gave me one short, simple reason that made the most sense to me: “It would be easier to make friends and know about a lot of the social events going on at the college with one.” Her reason was sooooo true. In the past, I would meet people, and the first thing they would ask me was if I had a Facebook or MySpace, and I would carelessly say no. Today, I believe that I had lost potential friends or associates by not having a Facebook or MySpace.
