Chapter 2

The letter

 They battled through rain and sleet and snow. Days became Weeks became months and soon lost all definition.

David received two letters, one from his Mother and one from the lad on the train. He read it hungrily. The lad had been injured but not seriously. He had killed three in nearly two days. He complained of rats and flies and poor provisions. He hoped David was well and the rain was holding off. He talked of football, and Christmas and the familiarity of homely things. David wrote back. After three months of hearing nothing he wrote again. The second letter was returned unopened, without explanation of circumstance.
