“Do you believe in ghosts?”

She didn’t expect a question like that, “I don’t think I do.”

“That’s sad.”

“Why sad?”

“Those that don’t believe tend to have trouble seeing them.”

“Do you believe?” she asked as they entered the kitchen. It was a huge kitchen and she marveled at it.

“This kitchen was originally designed to have two or three cooks and servants working all at the same time.”

Carol wondered if he just avoided answering her question or did he answer the one in her mind.

He opened up an ice chest and got out two soda’s. He opened them and put one on the counter for her. She picked it up and looked at it. It was an old fashioned soda that she had never heard of, “Is this any good?

“You’ve never had a birch beer soda?”

“Never heard of it?”

“My little sister and I love it.”

“I don’t have a little sister or brother, I’m the youngest of five girls?”

“And your father is still sane?

“Apparently you haven’t read any of his horror books.” They both laughed.

A floorboard creaked behind Carol, she turned around and saw a very pretty white haired girl coming into the kitchen. She had the strangest light colored blue eyes.

“Hi,” her young ten year old voice piped.

“My name is Carol, I live across the street,” she held out her hand to shake, but the girl just smiled and looked at her.

“This is my bratty little sister. I pretty much expect her to size you up like any other woman I meet. She thinks I should get married and have kids for her to play with.” Carol giggled and smiled over that. “Linda and I need to get some people to help clean up this place, so I can start having workers help me make this place a bit more modern.”
