The first chapter of a story I’m writing.

“C’mon Hayden, let’s do something,” said Hannah. Hayden turned to his left to the person sitting next to him. Hannah Bechett was one of Hayden’s best friends; he could trust her with anything.  She had long, curly brown hair, with eyes the color of wet sand tinted dark. She always wanted to have fun, and was amazed at the smallest things in life, like her favorite cartoon character’s country of origin. She was always fun to hang around, even though she was a little clumsy and was always a little dazed. She was a creative person, and she always tried to express herself with her clothing. Today, she was wearing her yellow “peace” shirt with the green splotches and the rainbow peace sign.

“Umm, Hannah, what exactly did you have in mind that we could do right now,” Hayden inquired to her.

“Can we throw pencils on the ceiling and see if it sticks? That’s always really fun!”

“Okay,” replied Hayden, “that sounds fun!”

“Yay!” exclaimed Hannah. She dragged her backpack over to the table, hoisted it up, and plopped it right on the table. From there, she reached inside of it and took out her pencil box. When she opened it up though, she discovered that she couldn’t find her pencil; her pencil box was vacant except for the odd colored pencil and an eraser with pictures doodled all over it.

“Wait, where did I put my pencil? I know I didn’t lose it already, I couldn’t have, could I?” She looked thoroughly disappointed with the loss of her pencil. “Agh! That’s my only pencil! This is so dramatic!”.

Oh! I remember where it is now!’ announced Hannah. “I dropped it a minute ago, and it rolled over to the projector cart to your feet. Can you get it for me?”

“No prob,” Hayden said. He scanned the ground to look for Hannah’s pencil. At first he couldn’t find it, but he then spotted it on the cart’s lower level, next to a stack of papers. He leaned forward, scooped up the pencil, and was about to return it to her, when he saw an odd business card on the cart. Hayden really wasn’t the type to snoop around other peoples stuff, but this particular card just caught his eye.  He took it and was about to examine it, when suddenly the shrieking, ringing noise of the final bell of the day interrupted him. Kids throughout the classroom were cheering and running to get out the door. Hayden pocketed the card and ran with Hannah out the door.
