Hearts of Stone.

The following serial novel is fan fiction based on THE PORTAL OF LIGHT (originally A RING OF STARS) by fellow Triond author Johanan Rakkav. Its basic characters and situations (and in particular the main protagonist, Chris Alan Starbright) are used with the permission of Johanan Rakkav.

==========================

The mastermind had failed in his plan to give the Nulls the army they were seeking. Chris Alan had defeated Mitzu without needing to fight, by rescuing his wife. Granite was dead by the hands of Susan Starrider and the elemental force was scattered. Yet there was a glimmer of hope, he was summoned by Set the adamai- serpent elemental. Protean was the proper name for those elementals who had more than one form. Archons were the really powerful ones. There was a plan within the plan so Set always told him. If the Nulls or Nicholas, or even Starbright figured out whom the real puppet master was pulling the strings of Riverwade then that could mean trouble.

This planet Egyptus was filled with swamps and fog, not a place Mastermind wished to be but his master bid him come.

Set sat on his black throne with his large pyramid ship in the background. His face hooded, his eyes green and his scaly skin black as night itself. The sheer presence of the Snake seemed to cause even one’s emotions to wither, Disciple of Entropy indeed. The Supreme Stratigist as he often called himself.

‘So the Nulls will not have their army, pity it means a closer alliance with Blackthorn for them, just as I planned.’ Set’s soft, hissing voice broke the silence.

‘You knew Starbright would defeat the army?’

‘Even you calculated for that.’ Set reminded.

‘What is our next move?’ Mastermind asked.

‘Come and see.’ Set teleported next to him and then teleported to his secret training feild. Th two then stood on a hill overlooking millions of Mecha Crabs? Ten times the size of the female zealot crabs that plagued the Ring.

‘What is this?’ Mastermind was amazed, he had designed them but to behold them in their glory was breathtaking for him.

‘Your design brought to life.’ Set smiled.

‘What will you do?’

‘Me? I will do nothing, these weapons are gifts to the crabs, they can drive them as though they were their own bodies.’

I like these sketches you do with my characters. I will be interested indeed to see how you plan to use a weakness in even you own character Toa’s knowledge (and therefore, in Chris Alan’s training) as part of the plot. I’d be even more interested to know how you came up with the idea (here or privately).

As my work (God willing) toward a publishable novel is requiring me to update my conceptions of characters and situations, you certainly have my permission to use the “vintage” framework you’re using. There’s no way you could keep up with all the changes I make over time. If there are specific issues or if you have specific questions, we can work them out.

For my part, I can’t keep editing your work save in very basic things; just working on what’s turned out to be an epic novel text (in cooperation with Leafygreens) is tremendously time-consuming. That and the changes in how I deal myself with Chris Alan Starbright and his friends and enemies has forced me to abandon my own ongoing story lines entirely, and to start over with a modified backstory. There will be things you will recognize (many things), but also important differences, should all this finally see the light of print somewhere (in an e-book or even on Triond and then my blogs).

:) OK, you can ignore MOST of what I say above. While there will be SOME differences in our frameworks, I’ve decided it’s not worth it to make radical changes on my end – otherwise I’ll never get anything published in a final form.

    Carry on.

:) Well, here I go again. See my upcoming article “The Portal of Light: A New Framework”. I’ve changed my mind back. Stay with the framework you’re using – but I’m stopping all my old story lines on Triond and elsewhere and (for the purpose of my novels) going in a somewhat different direction.

    Sorry about that.
