A pathologist examines two dead young women and passes sections of organs to pathology for examination. The pathologist examines the specimens and questions the accuracy of the collection of tissue. When the collection has been confirmed the answer is devastating. The impact of this finding stretches far beyond the lives and families of the two women.

December 21, 1999 Harrisburg PA

Stan and Beth Warner both raced to the front door when they heard it open. They were expecting their daughter and a friend from college. Lori was in the middle of her sophomore year at Penn State. She left college with a friend, went to Pittsburgh to visit with his family then they had drove to Harrisburg together. Beth and Stan were both worried because they knew this relationship had become serious and Lori was so short on explanation of the events. They had several possibilities on what was happening, she was pregnant or they were living together.

They had raised their children in a strong Christian environment where sex outside marriage and “shacking up” were wrong. The news Lori brought was so unexpected. She bounded in the door dragging Chad Martin behind her.

“Here he is mom, dad, the man of my dreams. I know you’ll like him.”

Both parents just stared.

“We have something to tell you. We’ve decided to get married during Christmas vacation.”

“So soon?” Stan asked, not knowing what else to say. “Why not wait till you finish college?”

“That’s too long, dad. I want to marry him now. We love each other, we want to be together, we want to raise a family together and there’s no reason we can’t start our lives together now.”

“But you could wait and get to know each other better.”

“We already know each other, but not in the Biblical sense, I mean.” She turned red, looked at her parents, “Mom and dad, I’ve, we’ve, well, you know, we’ve never tried it, if you know what I mean. Oh, shoot, you know, I’m still a virgin, we haven’t slept together.”

Beth looked at Stan. All of their fears had been for nothing. “You told me to wait, I did. I promised when I was fourteen and I kept the promise.” She giggled, “He’s not tried it either. We’ll just have to teach each other. It’ll be fun learning together, we can try it till we get it right.” Suddenly she realized she was talking to her parents about things she had never thought she could discuss. She turned brilliant red and blurted out, “We want your permission to get married.”

Stan just looked. By now Chad was recovering from Lori’s frankness. “Sir, I want to marry your daughter. What she has told you is correct, we, I, have never touched her or any other woman and that’s the truth. We agreed it was wrong so we didn’t do it. Now we want your permission to marry.”
