A pathologist examines two dead young women and passes sections of organs to pathology for examination. The pathologist examines the specimens and questions the accuracy of the collection of tissue. When the collection has been confirmed the answer is devastating. The impact of this finding stretches far beyond the lives and families of the two women.
“What if we don’t give it?” Beth asked, “You’re both young Lori has over two years of college.”
“I’m a sophomore too. We’ll manage somehow. Whether you agree or not we’ll eventually marry. It’ll be a lot easier if you consent. See, we want each other but we’re going to do what’s right, that’s get married first.”
Stan and Beth were stunned. About a half hour of conversation brought agreement. Chad’s parents had agreed to the marriage if the Warners would also agree. They would continue the current level of financial support. They wanted the kids to finish college. A phone call to the Martins finished the deal. They would marry in a chapel wedding before returning to school in January. They would find a place and it would be their first home. It was amazing how fast things moved but then Lori was the precocious one. She was born two years after her sister. By the time she was two it was obvious she had one primary goal in life, to erase the two year advantage her sister had attained through no effort of her own, being first born. Her older sister Lynn had just married a year ago in July after finishing college. She had one child in ten months and the Warners were almost certain another grandchild was in the planning stage.
The four of them spent the evening talking, planning and getting to know each other. When they retired Stan and Beth spent over an hour remembering the past. Beth was not quite nineteen when they were married. Twelve months later Lynn was born. When she was ten months old they decided to have a second child. Beth got pregnant on the second cycle but miscarried in the third month. A successful pregnancy resulted in Lori. Another daughter, Lucy, was born three years later, after several failures. Both were thankful Lucy was staying with a friend for the evening. The frank conversation would have been impossible with her in the house.
They called Lucy and Lynn the next morning and asked them to come over. Lynn would pick up Lucy at the friend’s house on the way. When they arrived, Lori broke the news that she and Chad were getting married. Lucy looked over at Chad, then at Beth. A grin crossed her face. “I understand the big hurry. You tried it. You told me you wouldn’t till you got married. Made me promise not to.” Her hand gestured a big belly, “When’s it due?”
Beth glared, “No I didn’t try it, and no, thanks, I’m not in a family way. Maybe all of your friends do it but I didn’t.”
Lucy, the youngest daughter shook her head. “On the level? You’re not?”
“Want me to take a pregnancy test? Have a doctor examine me? Sure I want to, real bad, look at him, he’s a real hunk, but it’s wrong and I can wait.” Inside she thought to herself, “but not for long. Thank God mom and dad agreed.”
“No, I guess that isn’t necessary. Just the girls in school who have tried it and claim it’s the greatest. A couple can prove they did it too.” She blushed as she realized what she had said.
The conversation turned to questions about Chad and where they would live.
