A pathologist examines two dead young women and passes sections of organs to pathology for examination. The pathologist examines the specimens and questions the accuracy of the collection of tissue. When the collection has been confirmed the answer is devastating. The impact of this finding stretches far beyond the lives and families of the two women.
Dr. Butler walked out of the OR, pulled off her gloves and threw them into the bin. The nurse would notify the husband that his wife was out of surgery and was doing well. “For how long?” she wondered. She had just done an exploratory Laparotomy on a twenty two year old woman who had been unable to conceive for over two years. Tests had shown some tube blockage and they had gone in to see if the damage could be repaired. She had encountered the worst possible scenario. Tubal blockage was no longer a real obstacle to conception, GIFT and other techniques had erased blocked tubes as a reason for a woman to remain childless. Of course medical intervention was necessary for conception but it was possible.
The examination of Lori Warner-Martin revealed healthy ovaries, but badly scarred and blocked tubes. No known technique could unblock them thus she was a candidate for IVF. A further check of the pelvic cavity showed a serious abnormality in the uterus. It was obviously damage done by a massive infection.
Unless medical science produced a miracle, Lori would never bear a child. Dr. Butler took a biopsy for examination. She would have the unhappy task of notifying the couple later today.
Lori and Chad were in the room when Dr. Butler entered. When she explained the situation Lori became hysterical. A sedative was ordered. Chad stood in the corner looking down at his feet. Dr. Butler was about to leave when Stan and Beth came to the door to visit their daughter. She did not recognize her colleague who she had not seen for several months. He had shaved his beard. Sensing a problem Stan caught her arm and pulled her into the hall.
“What’s wrong? What happened?” When he spoke she recognized him.
“Stan, I’m sorry, I didn’t recognize you. Is this your daughter?”
“Yes, how’s she doing?” Dr. Butler motioned to Chad who walked into the hall with them.
“Let’s go to the lounge.”
When they were seated Dr. Butler told of the surgery and the awful result. “It’s so badly scarred. I’ve only seen about a half dozen like it. All but two were probably the result of sexually transmitted PID. Those were the ones you showed me, remember?”
“You mean the convenience store clerk and the auto accident? We never did figure out what happened.” She looked at Chad, “Either of you had any infections?”
“No.”
“What about other partners?”
“Neither of us had other partners,” Chad replied emphatically. Dr. Butler dropped the subject and left. She would explore this further when she could talk to Chad alone.
