A pathologist examines two dead young women and passes sections of organs to pathology for examination. The pathologist examines the specimens and questions the accuracy of the collection of tissue. When the collection has been confirmed the answer is devastating. The impact of this finding stretches far beyond the lives and families of the two women.
Stan called Dr. Butler and Tom Sanders. Tom had a van, he would pick them up at their homes in two hours. He called Beth and told her about the trip, leaving out all details. She would just have to trust him. The other two similarly cleared their calendars.
At six thirty they were at the hotel. Stan called the phone number on the message and within two minutes there was a knock on his door. He answered and let in two men with FBI badges.
“We’ve been instructed to stay with you. There are two agents with each of your friends. This is serious.” A few minutes later the others joined them in the Stan’s room.
Jack Fuller called within a half hour. They would be meeting with some high level officials. The FBI agents would transport them. They boarded a van together and after ten minutes of driving the van turned into a parking garage. The driver took a space on the first level. They got out of the van and went to the third level where they met another group of people in a van. The people from the new van left the garage and went to dinner. There were eight people, the same as their group, and like their group, three of them were women. They got in the new van and twenty minutes later they walked in the back entrance of the White House. After the other group ate dinner, they returned to the Dupont Plaza.
Inside the White House they met with several other people, all connected with the situation and aware of its implications. Jack came in with the Surgeon General and several cabinet members. They talked till after two AM. Finally the Surgeon General got up from his chair.
“It appears we have a problem that can jeopardize the welfare of the country. It impacts social, military, and economic stability. We must have a fix for the problem and we must have it now. To allow this information to be made public without a solution would create panic and chaos.”
Another man rose, “We at the AG have been studying the problem, looking for a legal solution. We recommend the president declare a state of emergency immediately and declare marital law until the situation is resolved.”
The SG looked back. “Will martial law make babies? That is the real issue.”
With that Jack took the floor. “We have a situation here, with nearly a generation of infertile females. We have run some numbers and feel we have a solution, but don’t know how to implement it.”
“How did this happen?”
“We’re looking at it right now and believe we know what happened. If we do, we can stop the process immediately.”
“You mean fix it?”
“Not exactly. There is no known way to correct the damage to a woman after the infection occurs. We can prevent infection of new females.”
“What is the source of the infection?”
“The vaccine used to immunize babies. We started using a new vaccine in early 1981, twenty two years ago. We can define a cutoff within weeks of the release of the vaccine. We are now doing some studies which will be done by tomorrow afternoon. If they are positive, we must pull the vaccine and provide an alternative.
The group met till nearly 4 AM.
