A pathologist examines two dead young women and passes sections of organs to pathology for examination. The pathologist examines the specimens and questions the accuracy of the collection of tissue. When the collection has been confirmed the answer is devastating. The impact of this finding stretches far beyond the lives and families of the two women.
There was a stir in the House of Representatives when Peggy Kramer entered and took her seat. C-SPAN even cut to a camera that provided more than a brief shot of her. It was well known that she had not gotten pregnant and there had been rumors that she had used influence to have the doctors do something wrong during the procedures to prevent her getting pregnant or even that they had actually not done the procedure. The press was keeping score on those in Washington who were in the public eye. Peggy was dressed in a maternity outfit and she appeared to be possibly at five to six months. Everyone knew she had filled out too fast for this to be valid. She nearly ran from the floor twice because of the stares.
She had hoped it wouldn’t be necessary to tell them what she was doing, it was personal and she knew half of the story would only make matters worse. Down deep she knew that was a lame thought. In this town motives were always suspect. At noon she went back to her office, called Joan and they talked for nearly half an hour. After the call she called in her aide. “I need some things and one of the gals will have to get them for me because the press will follow me if I go out. Find someone they’ll not follow and when we finish, give her the rest of the day off to get this. Tell her not to come in till tomorrow, no matter when she finishes the shopping. If anyone follows her, go home then see if she can find a friend to get the stuff. Do you have a measuring tape?”
“Sure.”
“Get it and come back in.”
The session took a half hour. She returned to the house floor for the remainder of the day. The stares and whispers came from all sides. One evening news report made a joke about her false pregnancy. He called it one more example of Washington duplicity. He finished the report with another item. A black senator was caught on tape trying to pressure the Selective Service to be sure his daughter’s baby was carried by a black woman. He finished the report saying the two of them were examples of the Washington morass of deceit. Peggy’s husband saw the item on their TIVO. He saved it off to his PC before she came home and deleted it. He did not want her to see this now.
