A pathologist examines two dead young women and passes sections of organs to pathology for examination. The pathologist examines the specimens and questions the accuracy of the collection of tissue. When the collection has been confirmed the answer is devastating. The impact of this finding stretches far beyond the lives and families of the two women.
Peggy Kramer flew back to Kansas to continue her campaign. The fifteen point deficit evaporated within a day and she was now leading in the polls and pulling away. Her opponent had hitched his run for the office to a smear campaign. Now that it was defused, the race was over. He tried to claim she was doing something immoral but except for a few fanatics, the argument was lost. When she and her husband were alone in the hotel room he held her to him. “Show me that thing, the cyst that kept us from having children.”
She connected the control and aimed the camera. Paul began to cry. “I thought it might be me, I was afraid I wore jockey shorts too much. Now we know it wasn’t anything either of us did. I want to do something too if you agree. I want to donate sperm.”
Peggy hugged him, “For sure. If you want to, do it. I want to have you and I do one thing on my first cycle. In case something goes wrong, I want to have a set of two of my eggs fertilized with your sperm and frozen till I can use them.”
“For sure, but I want you there when I donate and I want to be with you when you do whatever you do.”
“Sure, but do you know it’ll be about three weeks. I’m on the drugs now, getting things started. I really felt bitchy yesterday, today I took a different pill and I feel sexy. Let’s do it.”
“With that thing on?”
“I can’t do it with it off.”
“How?”
“We did when I was pregnant, why not now?”
It was better than he expected.
They notified Joan of their decision the next morning and she told him to accompany her when she came in. The estimated date for her harvesting was two days before the election.
