A pathologist examines two dead young women and passes sections of organs to pathology for examination. The pathologist examines the specimens and questions the accuracy of the collection of tissue. When the collection has been confirmed the answer is devastating. The impact of this finding stretches far beyond the lives and families of the two women.

Kim Bishop got her papers from Selective service. She was scheduled to report for her first implant in November. She was devastated. She was having a great season. She could defer and do it later, but this was not an alternative. At best she could defer six months. She wanted to skip this. She had one child, her own, and didn’t want to go through the pregnancy routine again. She called her doctor and set up an appointment. She complained of cramps, and tried to convince him that she should be exempted, then tried to talk him into removing her uterus. He refused, it was not only medically wrong. It was illegal. She left crushed.

Several days later she overheard that one of the other women on the circuit. Marcy Davis was in a hospital in Harrisburg. She and Marcy had been playing doubles two years ago so she went in to see Marcy when she got home two weeks later. Marcy was nearly 30, had three children and was like a big sister.

Joan normally grabbed a salad and went to the lounge but when she went past the cafeteria the lasagna looked good so she picked up a plate of it. She sat at a table near the cash register. About four bites into the lasagna Stan joined her.

“Getting a little pudgy, aren’t you? Must be the lasagna. Eat that regularly and you’ll look full term by let’s say March.”

“February is better and I don’t have to eat the lasagna to do it. I am pregnant.”

“They didn’t draft you again already. That’s too close, one a year.”

“No, I drafted me. This one is mine. I plan to keep it.”

A big smile crossed Stan’s face. “Damm.” That was about the limit of his use of profanity. “You went and did it. I saw you about two weeks ago and thought you were but I didn’t get a good look.”

“I’d hate to be dead and have you examining me. Do you look at women all the time?”

“All the time. I bet you’d even look pretty in my area, but don’t do anything to hurry that. Slow down a little. You don’t have to make all of the world’s babies yourself.”

“I know, but I see so many hurt. My girls for example. Yours too.”
