A pathologist examines two dead young women and passes sections of organs to pathology for examination. The pathologist examines the specimens and questions the accuracy of the collection of tissue. When the collection has been confirmed the answer is devastating. The impact of this finding stretches far beyond the lives and families of the two women.
“What about your incision, you can’t play till it heals can you? When they cut your belly, it takes forever. Remember Jill, she had a hysterectomy, that’s what you had, and it took her over six months. She was still hurting when she first came back. They did a bikini cut, about eight inches long. I saw her in the hospital, with clamps in it. It hurt just looking at it.”
“They did her the old way. Had to, she had other problems. They had to take out her ovaries. They can’t reach them from below. Me, they did the right way, just the uterus, out the bottom. I kept the ovaries. Still make my own hormones and my sex drive is same as before. No surgical menopause like she had, no needing the hormones, just no more periods. Look here.” She pulled back her blouse. “See, no stitches, only some inside. They’ll heal fast.”
“What went wrong? Why did you bleed?”
Marcy motioned her close. “You can’t talk about this. I can go to jail for it. Nothing went wrong. It went exactly right, according to plan. I bled because they fixed me so I would bleed. I went to the hospital and they took it out. If they try to draft you this is a way out. There’s a gal who’ll fix you up for it. Let me warn you, it hurts like hell. I thought she was ripping it out. Don’t do it unless you have to.”
“I can’t wait. I’m scheduled for an implant in November. I can be off now better than later. Give me the name.”
“I can’t. Just sit tight, I’ll call a friend, she will see that they’ll call you.”
