A pathologist examines two dead young women and passes sections of organs to pathology for examination. The pathologist examines the specimens and questions the accuracy of the collection of tissue. When the collection has been confirmed the answer is devastating. The impact of this finding stretches far beyond the lives and families of the two women.

Kim got a call from a woman who identified herself as Marcy. She knew it wasn’t Marcy but she was sure this was the contact. The woman asked to meet her at a diner at two. When Kim left the diner she went to her bank and withdrew some money. Over the next week she withdrew over $10,000 from her accounts. Three thousand was put in an envelope and dropped under a park bench. Later that night she got the confirming call.

They had agreed to do it in Harrisburg in a few days. Kim had an appearance there for a clothing chain early in the day. She and her husband would leave the hotel to go out to eat and meet the woman. After the procedure, he would take Kim to the hospital for the surgery.

August 29, 2004, Harrisburg

They met the woman in a parking lot as planned. The lot was only about six blocks from the hospital. She was in a small motor home. They entered it and Kim handed over a package containing another $7000. Kim was taken to the back where she undressed and was positioned on an examining table. Her body and legs were strapped securely in place. They pulled a sheet over her and draped one over each leg. She was ready for the procedure.

It took about fifteen minutes to perform the procedure. The pain was terrible. When they completed it they helped her dress, put a towel on the car seat and helped her into the car. The one woman handed her a cord. She told her to pull it out when they got to the hospital. It went inside her. Her belly hurt and she was leaking blood. She would not have to fake anything. This was real.

Her husband called her doctor and told him she was bleeding and they would be headed for Poly. As they pulled away they saw the motor home pull out and leave. The car followed them to the edge of the parking lot. At the edge of the hospital parking lot the woman came over to the car. She opened the door and pulled the cord. It moved some and the pain got worse but it didn’t come out. She hurt so bad. The woman pulled again and something inside her came loose and popped out. Suddenly there was blood everywhere. The woman took the object and left. Dave drove to the hospital entrance. Kim was taken to the ER.

Joan just sat down to read when her pager beeped. She looked at the number and the adrenaline started pumping. It was the ER. She called and was told they had a report of a young woman who was bleeding badly. She was visiting in Harrisburg, her doctor called to tell them her husband was bringing her in. Joan’s one partner, Betty was on site, she just finished a delivery and was ready to leave when the call came in. She would stay till the patient arrived. Joan would join her.

The patient was in the ER on a litter. Her husband had driven her from the hotel in their car. He had not called an ambulance. Joan looked on as she was brought in. The car seat was covered by a heavy towel. It was soaked with blood. The blood soaked through the woman’s skirt. Clearly she was bleeding profusely.

They moved her to the treatment area. After a short exam both Betty and Joan agreed that surgery was indicated. The consent form was signed and the woman was made ready for surgery. Joan looked at the chart. “Name: Kim Bishop Age 26 Occupation: Pro Tennis.”

“Another one? Could be.” Joan thought.

As they scrubbed Joan discussed the case with Betty. They would go in, try to repair the uterus and if that was not possible, remove it.
