A pathologist examines two dead young women and passes sections of organs to pathology for examination. The pathologist examines the specimens and questions the accuracy of the collection of tissue. When the collection has been confirmed the answer is devastating. The impact of this finding stretches far beyond the lives and families of the two women.
“What do I do?”
“Do you want us to redo the procedure and drop you at a hospital?”
“Can you do it now?”
“Sure.”
“I got to get rid of this uterus.”
With that the door opened and three people entered. The three of them were handcuffed and taken to the federal building. Kim was arraigned and released on $100,000 bail.
At home she was miserable. She turned to CNN to see what was happening on the circuit. The story headline came up, “Hysterectomy Ring Arrests.” They showed pictures on the screen. They included Marcy, the two women identified as nurses, a Pro Golfer and a lawyer. The last was a picture of her. The story mentioned that more arrests were expected.
September 24, 2004
By the time of the preliminary hearing the lawyers for Kim and Marcy and the other three professionals had struck a deal with the prosecutors. If they plead guilty there would be no jail time. They would be sentenced a fine of $25,000 and five years, the minimum for the offenses with the time to be served as probation if all other conditions of the sentencing were met. All but Kim would have the harvesting portal installed for a year and would participate fully donating ova. Any infraction of parole would bring house arrest. Any infraction of house arrest and parole was cancelled and they would be off to jail to serve the remainder of their sentence. They would be incarcerated for the full sentence. Kim would be implanted as soon as she healed and would have two more children. She would finish a year with an ova portal.
Kim looked at the group as the sentences were read. She and the other athletes were out of it for five years. Their careers were ended. The lawyer could still practice. This was unfair. When she got home that night CNN was reporting the lawyer’s actions were being reviewed by the State Bar Association. She would likely have her license revoked till at least a year after she served her sentence. Her career may not be ended but it certainly was stunted. She could work as a law clerk or paralegal but not practice. Her potential earnings were cut at least ninety percent.
The two women who performed the procedures were facing twenty years in jail and fantastic fines. They too cut a deal. In exchange for a deal that let them avoid jail time and fines they would serve as surrogates under loose house arrest for ten years and forfeit their nursing licenses for that period. The deal also required they turn over the names of all past patients and ones that had paid the retainer money as well as the names of others who they knew were performing procedures. They had kept the envelopes from each of the patients, all of which had fingerprints on them. Some of those fingerprints were not of the woman and these would be investigated by the police. They had also saved a blood sample and small piece of the uterine lining of each patient in alcohol. The DNA for each of these confirmed the procedure was done. This was all done in case they were caught they would have something to bargain with to stay our of jail. Most of the money had been sent off shore and was unreachable. These were included in the documentation.
