The 2010 blockbuster movie Inception made me think, like it did to numerous others. But apart from trying to figure out what actually happened in the exceptionally written and directed movie, I stumbled upon a particular dialogue.

“An idea. Resilient… highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it’s almost impossible to eradicate. An idea that is fully formed – fully understood – that sticks; right in there somewhere…… The smallest seed of an idea can grow. It can grow to define, or destroy you.

That is what inception’s protagonist Dom Cobb says. It is probably the underlying foundation of the whole movie. As a matter of fact, even director Christopher “Inception” was an idea which must have crept in his mind for years until he finally completed the movie. Evidently indeed, it has been remarkably rewarding for Nolan, in the sense, it has helped to “define him” in the eyes of millions of viewers.

A discussion on the concept of an “Idea” can be endless, which I can guarantee given I’m a part of it. An Idea can be an innovative fix to a problem posed by a limited availability of resources, as simple as using an old cloth to replace a duster when you are in a hurry to clean the house. On the other hand, it can be an intriguing figment of someone’s imagination, which when made public, may do more than astonishing and baffling other people. Space travel, at some point in history was such an idea. It made people at that time think and understandably others term it as ‘not-feasible’. Those who fell hosts to this parasitic idea, went on to contribute to the technology that now allows us to travel into not only space, but to extra-terrestrial bodies like the Moon, and hopefully in the future, other planets. As a modern day example, Time travel would be another similar idea which seems quite refutable as of now. Who knows we would someday be able to make it possible?

|Edison’s idea of the light bulb is responsible for lighting up our houses|

An Idea is hard to resist, once it starts creeping in your mind. It can change everything, your priorities, your way of life, your aim in life, our social profile, and in extreme cases your own self. An immature youngster may get struck with an idea of secretively stealing some money from his father’s wallet. He might work out his idea perfectly and enjoy his reward, not only in the form of money but also in the form of an unavoidable satisfaction one gets by implementing one’s idea. Such a child, who by chance skipped his lesson of ethics on stealing because he wasn’t caught in the process, might potentially become a professional thief in near future. Who knows if criminals as actually victims of some unsocial parasitic ideas. Such ideas lead one to continue on an insatiable journey of working out and applying his/her ideas. On the contrary, a person might get struck with an excellent idea, which happens all the time with potential entrepreneurs. That idea might be the turning point in one’s life which would hugely escalate everything from his/her social status to his/her bank balance.

You have analysed the idea virus very effectively, it is so abstract, yet the idea can reach heights.

I, too, watched the movie Inception and it made me think. What’s real? What’s imagined? How can we ever know for sure? How much thought must we give to an idea before it becomes reality? The list of questions go on and on. Great write!

Well written so many things depends on the ideas only. Everyone has ideas some come to light and the others remain in the dark. Nice share.
