Some of us found it hard to adjust to our new home in the colonies. We had found a town to the north of New York city in what is now Connecticut that was far enough from the sea that most of the people didn’t know we were little more than pirates. It was here that Sam and Maudene built their home and Laela and I found that we could live without having to worry about to many questions.

There were stories of witch hunts to the north that I often looked into, I was happy to find that most of them were little more than foolish people killing each other. Very few of our kind had even come to the north and even fewer were dumb enough to show people what they were. We all figured that it was a good place to be when we wanted to be away from the port and our ship for more than a day.

It was during this time that I met a man who introduced me to a people I would come to love and feel shame for the part that I played in their fall. Nathaniel Ward was a white man whose family had come to these lands in the early years at the Plymouth colony. His family didn’t survive the third winter, dying of fever.
