Part of my fantasy novel.
They walked for about ten minutes before Lucky slowed down and began to sniff the forest floor for clues, “Is it near here?” Lucky barked in agreement and followed the invisible, yet obviously pungent trail to where he had got the cotton. Lucky barked again just before a clearing in the forest, Prior went first and looked around. Slumped up against a tree was a man, covered in blood. His face was undistinguishable as it was covered with cuts, bruises and pulsating muscle from under the skin. The man yelped and held up his hand to Prior, “Prior, they are coming.” Prior looked around fearfully, his head twisting and turning in a flurrying speed,
“Who? Who are coming? And how do you know my name?” The man groaned and laid his hand back down on the floor, “Think about it Prior…”
“…Papa?” The man grunted, “Papa?!” Tears welled up in Prior’s eyes, “How? When?”
“They ambushed me in the mines. I had my back turned, Lucky had been barking but I’d ignored him. They beat me with clubs.”
“Who are they? How did you get here?”
“Clans men, after they attacked me they dragged me out of the mine and left me by the mouth of the cave. Lucky dragged me the rest of the way.”
“But clans never come this far out!”
“They mentioned something to do with a religious shrine and the only place I can think of is-”
“Aurora’s Temple?”
“Yes. Don’t interrupt, it’s rude Prior.”
“Sorry, are you okay?” Papa laughed,
“I think I’ll live, although I don’t know how I’ll ever work again. I can barely see. There are more pressing issues at present. Prior, I want you to run to the village and gather as many people as you can, we need to stop them from doing anything in the temple. If anything goes wrong up there, then let our moral standings help us because their wrath will be unstoppable.” Aurora’s Temple was the palace of the gods when they used to live on Uniris, millions of years ago, no-one ever approached it for the fear of being smitten by the gods. It seemed this one clan was getting slightly desperate. Prior stood up,
