The prologue to a (hopefully) good story! It’s about the Earth becoming a wasteland, and people must either move underground or set out to colonize the universe if they want to live. Mankind shall never be the same after this.

The man turned around to look back at the barren landscape behind him and sighed. The place he once called home, totally decimated. It was probably the most depressing thing he had ever seen. In the distance, he still heard the shouts and screams of the people who weren’t going to make it, the ones who went crazy.
It took a long time to set up this evacuation, in which time more people were infected and killed. Humans themselves were the ones who caused this global devastation. It wasn’t just his hometown, but the whole Earth. No human had predicted the severe impacts of mankind’s own errors, but it was basically the apocalypse, caused by pollution, war, radiation, and the many other mistakes man made. It was too late to stop it from happening. An epidemic that slowly and painfully killed people off after they became insane was spreading rapidly, caused by the air pollution, and there was no cure. Wildfires were burning off all the land on the planet because of global warming. The ocean was raging and tsunamis were constantly forming due to the vast amounts of radioactive waste and other trash in it. The Earth was becoming an inhospitable, dead wasteland thanks to its own inhabitants. The only thing to do was to go into the final frontier; outer space.
An organization known as the U Group was in control of the evacuation project. The U Group was a group of select scientists, mainly rocket scientists, that knew all there was to know about space travel and rockets. The U was short for universe. Everyone going into space with the U Group would be known as “Stargazers”. They were still trying to figure out all of the unknown facts of space travel, such as wormholes. Their plan was to send some of the insane, already doomed people through one, with only one sane man who was willing to risk his life for the sake of science. The U Group had allowed two days for anyone on Earth to travel to one of the seven launch sites scattered across the planet. The plan was to colonize the moon first, and, as more was learned about life in space, eventually other planets. Hopefully, planet colonization would be found possible. The orders the U Group gave to the rest of the sane people who were unable to come into space was to dig underground and start a new life and colony there, with a slightly smaller group of scientists being in control of that operation, being named the D Group for digging. The people going underground would be known as “Excavators”. Both groups had a few government officials or former government officials in order to help create a form of government in the colonies.
The man turned back around. He knew there was no coming back, but it was the only option he had if he wanted to live. Thoughts were racing through his mind. He stared at the spaceship and thought of the new life that would change him and all of humanity forever. Everyone was putting their lives in the hands of one of the two groups. The D Group and the Excavators had already begun their project, and the Earth’s surface would never again be seen by any sane human when the last man boarded the ship. His eyes teared up as he walked up the gangplank into the spaceship. Immediately, he could tell he wasn’t the only one upset, as everybody else was crying or looking extremely nervous as well. The man spotted his wife and son and started towards them, the nervousness and sadness clear on all three of their faces. The door shut behind him and he felt the grinding of gears beneath his feet as the gangplank withdrew back into the ship, not to be let down again for another month when the first attempt at colonizing the moon is made.
