Chapter three in "The Underground"
Batch headed for the depths of the Underground.
“Batch!” Trancegirl yelled. “Where are you going?”
“What’s the difference? Who cares?”
He hesitated slightly as the crowd poured by.
She pushed open the iron gate of the cemetery from where she had been watching people go in and out of the subway, and stepped towards him.
“Where are you headed?”
“I’m leaving.”
“Oh.”
“I’ll be back.”
“Yeah, I guess that’s what you think. Have you seen Dancegirl?”
“Yeah. She’s back there.”
“Is she okay?”
“Why don’t you ask her yourself?”
“I wish I could, Batch. I wish I could.”
“Listen, Trancegirl, I got to go.”
“Okay. Fine, but be careful.”
“I will.”
She kissed him on the cheek.
“Thanks,” he said, and then disappeared, like all the others.
