Anash and Vorent meet with the aging Dragon Keeper. He wants the truth about the death of Berliquwin.
Pineaphelus leaned forward toward Anash, “You were not surprised to see him do this. Tell me why? Is it the same reason you knew that Gregoire was my spy and the same reason you knew about the ambush you avoided during this years Dragon’s challenge?”
Anash didn’t bat an eye at these questions, “Yes, sir.”
“You have dryad in your blood.”
Anash slightly raised his eyebrows on that one, “On my mother’s side.”
“Do spirits talk to you like they do with your mother?” this question actually got Anash to show a bit of surprise on his face.
“The only spirit that I can hear and I have trouble sometimes hearing is the voice of my father.”
“Tell me about that.”
Anash never expected to tell anyone about this and he felt his mouth begin to dry, “Most of the time, it only sounds like a very quiet or far away whisper. If I hear it in my right ear, then I know to look to my right and if in my left ear, I know to look to my left. Very rare does he speak loud or in more than one or two words.”
“That would explain why Torlene claims you have eyes in the back of your head,” Vorent spoke up.
“Your father and Berliquwin did not get along. Your father actually voiced to me that he believed Berliquwin was doing something he shouldn’t. I’ve had three spies in his unit ever since and they never caught him doing anything.”
“We followed him to where he met a dryad. There conversation was only about troop movements and supply routes. Berliquwin never asked for any info or payment. Most traitors get caught because of their greed,” Gregoire put in.
“That is why we confronted them there. I felt we had to capture the dryad to have any proof,” Anash added.
“What went wrong?”
“The dryad had two swords. When Berliquwin saw us, he grabbed one of them and then fell on it. He laughed at us as he died. The dryad fought with us like a mad man. It was obvious that he would rather die than be captured,” Gregoire told the Keeper.
“And that is why Vorent’s report tells that you two and Berliquwin found the dryad spying around the camp and when you cornered him, he killed Berliquwin and Anash killed the dryad.”
“And this is what you told to his wife and son?” Pineaphelus said. Anash and Vorent nodded. The old Dragon Keeper looked over at the pants that he had given to Anash and asked, “When is the wedding?” To which Anash blushed.
