Denise Shore had just seen Carol take off her leg and was spent emotionally. She needed a drink. Susan offered to get one, soda of course.

Susan got up and went to the refrigerator. “Anyone else want a drink? Soda I mean.”

There were three assents. Susan pulled out the glasses and turned to Denise. “Put ice in them, I’ll pour. I hope you like Diet Coke, that is all there is tonight. Wednesday we shop. If someone likes something else we can get it then.”

Denise handed the glasses to the others and was about to sit down. Carol asked her to sit her leg in the corner. She looked hard at the leg for a few minutes as if afraid to touch it then took it and carefully placed it in the corner.

She picked up her glass and sat on the empty place on the bed next to Debbie. They talked for a couple minutes then Debbie asked Denise, “Do you think Carol has a pretty stump?”

“I don’t know.”

“Well it is either pretty or it is not. Which is it?”

“I guess it looks nice. I haven’t seen one before, I mean up close. How would I decide?”

“Maybe you could compare it to another stump and tell her which is the prettiest?”

“Well, if there was another to compare it to. But I wouldn’t just go around asking someone to see their stump.”

“Here.” She handed Denise two pictures. “Tell me which one looks the prettiest. The one with the blue shorts is Carol.”

She took the pictures. They both showed a woman from waist to ankle with one leg and one stump. The left legs were shapely. The right stumps were nicely shaped. Both women were wearing very short shorts. Crutches framed the edge of the pictures.

Denise looked long. “It’s hard to tell. But Carol’s leg is really nice.”

“Her leg or her stump?”

“Well.”

Carol chimed in. “You don’t like my stump?”

“But.”

“My hubby does. In more ways than one. I can do things to him no woman with two legs can do.”

Denise looked at the pictures. “Where did you get the picture of the other woman?”

Debbie stood up, pulled up her gown and slipped off her prosthesis. “We took them Saturday.”

Denise watched as Debbie sat down and wrapped her stump. She was emotionally drained by the demonstration. She was again asked to sit the leg in the corner. She was sweating when she sat down. Her mouth was dry and she was shaking. She needed a drink and Diet Coke was not going to cut the thirst. She was about to ask a question but there was no way she was going to be able to ask anything.  She was not sure she could handle any more information.
