Denise Shore leaves the hospital with a large cast.
“You will not be walking on that cast. You broke bones. Your leg can’t support you. You will be using crutches.”
“Crutches. What kind of back woods hick hospital is this? When Jan broke her ankle they put this thing on her foot. It was a leather boot with laces. She was off work three days. Get this thing off and put one of them on.”
“You didn’t break an ankle, you broke both of the bones in your lower leg, right about here.” He pointed to a spot about 3 inches below her knee. “The only ways we have to keep the ends of the bone stable are a cast, traction or surgery. We decided the surgery wasn’t warranted and you wouldn’t want to spend more than a month in traction.”
“Then put a thing on it so I can walk on it.”
“With this kind of cast usually people can’t walk. Your knee would be stiff.”
“I don’t give a shit about what you usually do. I’m Denise Shore and you will do what I say. Now put one of those walking thingies on it and let me get out of here. I’m walking out of here. I’m not going to look like some gimp.” Carol frowned at the remark.
The doctor shrugged. With the stiff leg the walker would have marginal use but it wouldn’t hurt anything because she would never really be able to use it.
“Let’s get you ready to leave and then we will take you down to the cast room and add a walker to the cast. I’ll check a couple of patients while you get her ready. Be back in ten minutes to check her out.
Carol and Susan helped her sit on the bed. Susan handed her panties. “Now how the fuck do you suppose I put them on?”
Susan took the panties and hooked them over the cast and pulled them up to knee. “Now put your other leg in and pull them up as far as you can.” She slid a pair of shorts over the cast and Denise’s other leg and pulled them above her knees. “Now stand up and pull them on.”
They helped her stand. She was unsteady enough that she obviously would have failed a field sobriety test. She pulled up the panties and shorts. “Now off with the hospital gown.”
“Not with all of you here.”
“Denise, I’m a nurse. I have seen boobs bigger and smaller than yours. Pull the gown off or I will take it off.”
Denise slowly pulled the gown over her head. Susan pulled out a bra. “Here.” She pulled on the bra. Susan handed her a pull over top and she put it on too.
“Get your shorts buckled and we are out of here.” They helped her shuffle turn and sit in the wheelchair. As they wheeled her to the door the doctor came by.
“You ready?”
Carol answered, “Yes.”
Fifteen minutes later the walker was in place and they were headed to the elevator. The doctor reminded her that the plaster would have to dry four hours before she could put weight on it.
The doctor observed. “She’s too drunk to drive and she is even too drunk to walk on crutches.”
