If you can’t walk you use a wheelchair.
Carol interrupted the conversation. “We are pulling off the road at a rest stop in a few minutes. We have to get Denise ready for today.”
“I can’t, be in public, this way. With this cast.”
“You will.”
They pulled off and helped Denise to the shower. Debbie pulled a garbage bag over her cast and tied it with a nylon stocking. They helped her into the shower in the RV. When she came out they helped her dry and dress. With that done they helped her back into the seat and got her legs back into the slings. It took twenty minutes and they were back on the road.
Carol brought up a hair drier.
“You can’t run that unless we are plugged in.”
“With the on board AC generator we can. Susan, turn on the power.”
Susan pushed a couple buttons. “Power is up.”
“Why don’t we just do that at night?”
“Because the exhaust can kill us if it gets into the RV. When we are stopped we have to watch that. They burn gasoline. Smart people don’t run them when they sleep.”
“So we hook up the AC.”
“Yes.”
“What if we had to stop where there isn’t an AC hookup?”
“We would run the gen set till we were ready for bed and then turn it back on when we got up. The battery would handle the refrigerator overnight. Once you go to bed there isn’t much else running.”
“You really know a lot.”
“And there is a lot I don’t know. I try to learn something every day.”
Denise dried and fixed her hair and makeup. Carol held the mirror for her.
They were just getting finished when Debbie called out. “Mall in five minutes.”
Carol looked at her watch. “We are about ten minutes later than we should be. This setup is going to be hairy. Susan, get the manager on the phone and tell him to meet us wherever we are to set up.”
They pulled in and Carol unhooked Denise’s legs. “We will get a wheelchair outside. Then we need you to get to the door. We will help you get down the steps and into it. We need Susan outside to help you.”
With Denise outside in the chair the others hung the signs and got prepared. The mall manager had the tables and chairs ready. With Denise in the wheelchair Carol handed her things that needed to be placed on the tables and she started wheeling them over and setting them up. They were ready with five minutes to spare. When she parked at the table Carol lifted the leg rest as high as possible on the wheelchair for Denise. “We can’t let that leg swell. This will help some. Do you need something for pain?”
