The amps wear their pegs.

“Come on.”

“And one of them was a woman. She brushed against me on purpose. Two guys tried too.”

“The same guy told me he bet I looked better than you with the same outfit.”

“At least twenty five people asked about the signs about the various stories. When I told them they were our stories, they all expressed hope the studio would do them.”

“What stories?”

“Did you see the new signs, “Booze and Biking – The Susan King Story”, “One Short Leg – the Carol Dart Story”, and “Bottle Dirt Biking – The Debbie Michaels Story”?”

“Yes, but I didn’t connect them.”

Carol continued. “Well, that they are us. The four of us have something in common. We are all drunks.”

“I guess I am too.”

“I didn’t exclude you. All three of us have more than one DUI stop before we lost our legs. And we kept driving. My accident wasn’t considered my fault but if I had been sober it probably wouldn’t have happened. I was so drunk I saw him coming and didn’t have the coordination to get out of the way. I had a .19 alcohol content, almost passed out. So unless I want to lie to myself, when I look in the mirror I see the drunk that cost me my leg every morning. I wasn’t one hundred percent honest with you before when I told you some guy hit me. He was drunk but he was not as drunk as I was. He was only .16 BAC. But he crossed the line and hit me so it was technically his fault.”

“How do you live with that?”

“Like I told you before. I have to or hurt a lot of other people. I can’t do that. Every time I want a drink and think how good it would be I remember what it did to me and almost did to my family.”
