Surgery for all of the women.
“So if she has this surgery she can move her prosthetic lower leg with those muscles?”
“Yes. Since some of that muscle will be removed she will not have the full strength in that leg without some conditioning and may never get one hundred percent but it is significant. At her amputation level she will get over eighty five percent.”
Carol chimed in, “Wow. I could go for that surgery myself.”
Debbie added, “Me too.”
Susan looked up, “Everything for them, nothing for me. The BK’s are always left out.”
“That’s not true. How long is your stump?”
“About six inches.”
“You probably have only half of the muscle to work with but it will still help. And although we can’t do as much in mobility for a BK we can give you a much better connection for your prosthesis. This reduces the stump pressure, stability and rotation problems. And we can usually give you some ankle movement.”
“Wow. The ankle movement would be nice but any improvement in connection is great. My biggest problems are contact sores and prosthesis rotation. My foot at times seems to have a mind of it’s own.”
“This would essentially fix both.”
“The ankle movement would be nice but give me the others and it isn’t important. The flex foot does a nice job as long as it doesn’t swing out to the side.”
“I have talked with Donald Fritz this morning and he said proceed with planning this surgery for Denise but I felt I should ask you before I did it.”
Carol piped up. “If she decides she doesn’t want the surgery, take me, fix my stump that way and I’ll not tell anyone you did the wrong patient. I know how much more mobility Susan has and this would give me far more than what she has.”
Denise looked at Carol. “You are kidding. I take it you are suggesting I have it done this way. Is it really that significant?”
“Yes.” She looked at the doctor. “Do hers, then come back and get me. Then I can convince her it is good.”
He laughed. “I can’t do that. I only have authorization for twenty five surgeries, eighteen revisions and five new amputations. The authorized revisions have already been done. She is the last new amputation.”
“Well, what do I have to do to get that changed?”
“Talk to Mr. Fritz. He can change a lot of things. I was amazed at the things he has done in the last month.”
Carol looked at the others and shrugged.
“We also do some things different here in pain management. We don’t give as many systemic drugs but we use more locals. This allows you to get back on your feet and still not have the pain while not being zombies We will give you some pretty stiff shots today but by the day after tomorrow you will be on the locals and start therapy later in the day. You will wake up with a cast on your stump. That is to keep it from swelling and hold the muscles in place. Any other questions?”
“No.”
“Then we get you ready. The longer we wait the sicker you get.”
Her leg was shaved, an IV started and a catheter inserted and she was taken off to surgery.
She came back just before noon, really out of it.
