Denise Shore was the sometimes naughty girl next door in the TV series, "School Days". Denise liked to party, hung over she was nearly impossible to work with. Finally the cost of having her on a set outweighed her appeal to the viewers.
“That one was much shorter. That is usually a good sign that they are going to stop soon. Maybe one more, maybe two, maybe none.”
“I can’t believe I considered the joy of getting drunk worth puking my guts out the next morning while I tried to not piss on the floor at the same time.”
“Well, I could say you were stupid but I indict myself because I did it too.”
“I can’t believe someone like you would take to the booze.”
“I can’t believe someone with the opportunity you had would do it.”
She reached down and held her belly. “Is there a problem? My bladder should be full. I mean I had to piss almost non-stop when I drank.”
“There is a catheter in it, a hose to drain it. It just goes out the hose and into a bag on the side of the bed.”
“Golly. If I had that when I was drinking.”
“I actually considered doing it. I was in nursing when I was drinking heavy and had stolen a catheter. I never put it in because I always planned to be sober the next morning and by the time I realized I should put it in I was already too drunk to get one in. They are not easy to get in when you are drunk.”
“I can’t imagine you drunk. You are so proper.”
“Let me assure you. I really tied it on when I drank. You know the other night when you got up and looked at the bottle?”
“Yes.”
“I considered getting up for a shot.”
“No. Not you. You are off it.”
“I still remember the rush of the first drink and I know if I take one sip it is all over. I will either run out of booze or drink till I pass out.”
“Not you.”
“Me, Debbie, Susan, Denise and every alcoholic I know who is honest with themselves. We all liked the booze and down deep we all know we still do. What keeps us sober is seeing what it does to others around us. Do you know that having the booze in the RV was risky for us too?”
“No.”
“And do you know I can’t drink one small drink because I can’t stop with one.”
“I suddenly realized that when I looked at the bottle. Tell me, can I beat the booze?”
“I do it every day. So do Debbie and Susan. We keep remembering how we got here. It helps. It takes wanting to more than anything else.”
“But how can I be sure I stay off of it?”
“You can’t. It is one day at a time.”
“I know. I realized the cast I was hauling around was because I sneaked out to get drunk. It wasn’t worth getting hurt again.”
“Keep thinking that way every day. You forget it one day and you could be a drunk again.”
“That is scary.”
“Scary enough to keep you sober?”
“I think.”
