Denise Shore was the sometimes naughty girl next door in the TV series "School Days". Denise liked to party, but hung over she was nearly impossible to work with. Finally the cost of having her on a set outweighed her appeal to the viewers.

“No. They are the same length. It is just thinner so it looks longer. You know how girls with thin legs look taller.”

“Now we need to get you up on your feet. Really bad things happen to patients that lay in bed too long. I don’t want you to get pneumonia on my-watch. I don’t want to do the paperwork.” She laughed. Denise looked at her. “It is a joke, we say we don’t want a patient to have problems because if they do we have to do the paperwork.”

“Oh.”

“When we get you up I want you to sit there for a while till you feel steady, then we get you up on your feet.”

“Foot.”

“No. Feet. The crutch tip on that pylon is now your left foot. We want you to get up, put that tip on the floor and make a step with the crutches. We don’t want you to put any more weight on that pylon than is necessary to keep the crutch tip on the floor. Here, put this sneaker on this foot.”

“Can I loosen up my right leg a little before I try to stand?”

“Sure.”

Denise sat for a couple minutes flexing her right leg and lifting the left a little to flex the hip. “I’m ready. Let’s do it.”

A nurse got on each side and helped her as Denise pushed herself off the bed. When she was vertical she held her left leg in front of her at an angle and checked the crutches. They were the blue ones. They were the right length.

“Now take two steps with the crutches with your leg up like that to get the feel of it.”

She took the two steps. “It is easier without that heavy cast.” She started to cry. “Not having the leg is easier because I don’t have the cast.”

Carol came over and held her. “It will never be the same but you are going to be fine. You know that.”

“Yes. It just takes some getting used to.”

“Yes. It takes a lot of getting used to.”

The nurse broke in. “Now put the tip on the floor and let a small amount of your weight on it, just enough to make it stay on the floor.”

Denise tentatively lowered the pylon toward the floor till it was vertical. As she did she raised her body a little with the crutches and by raising to the ball of her right foot. She stood with the pylon off the floor. “Lower your body slowly till there is pressure on the pylon.”

“How do you tell, I mean how do I know when I start putting weight on it?”

“You will feel pressure at your hip when it makes contact. For now don’t put more than a minimal amount of pressure on it. You need to get the feel of it.”

Denise lowered herself slowly till the tip touched and then relaxed a little more. She looked up at the nurse. “It doesn’t hurt.”

“It shouldn’t.”

“Now take two steps with that amount of pressure on the pylon.”

Denise took two steps. “Good. Now turn around and start back.”

Denise shuffled a turn and took the two steps back, shuffled another turn and lowered herself on the bed.

The nurse smiled. “Enough for now. After supper we will be back to try again.”

“Thanks, I need to rest a little.”

Later in the afternoon they removed the IV and the catheter. Walking would be easier.

Denise ate a light supper and did a second exercise period. This time they took her out into the hall and part way to the nurses’ station and back. When they got back Denise was covered with sweat. She sat on the bed. They helped her lay back on the partially angled bed.

“I did it.”

“Yes. You did it.”

She slept the night with only one addition of pain medicine.
